Boxing: Carl Frampton to Fight Alejandro Gonzalez on PBC on CBS July 18
Call it another British invasion because undefeated super
bantamweight Carl Frampton is set to make his U.S. debut on July 18
on the next edition of Premier
Boxing Champions on CBS. The event will be held inside the Don
Haskins Center in El Paso, Texas, and will air live on CBS at 4
p.m. ET/1 p.m. PT.
Frampton, who hails from Belfast, Northern Ireland, has been rampaging throughout the lower weight classes as of late, with big wins over the likes of Steve Molitor, Kiko Martinez (twice) and Hugo Cazares. Frampton (20-0, 14 KOs) is vying to put his country into a frenzy like former Olympian and world champion Wayne McCullough did in the 1990s.
“It’s an honor to be making my U.S. debut on CBS,” said Frampton in
a statement. “I’ve accomplished a lot in my career and I’m looking
forward to even more success starting July 18. It’s going to be a
great afternoon for all of the fight fans watching.”
Standing in the way of “The Jackal” is Mexico’s Alejandro “Cobrita” Gonzalez Jr., a tough brawler who has tasted defeat only once in his career. Gonzalez (25-1-2, 15 KOs) has won three straight bouts and holds wins over solid contenders Jose Cayetano and Hanzel Martinez. Gonzalez is the son of Mexican legend Alejandro “Cobrita” Gonzalez.
“I’m thrilled to be fighting Carl Frampton in El Paso and I promise I will leave everything in the ring,” said Gonzalez Jr. “I know there will be lots of Mexican fans there supporting me and my plan is to fight hard and take away Frampton’s perfect record.”
Also slated to fight on the PBC on CBS card is former heavyweight world championship challenger Chris Arreola (36-4, 31 KOs). Arreola is coming off an eight-round unanimous decision win over Curtis Harper in March, this after he fell short of capturing the vacant WBC heavyweight title against Bermane Stiverne last May.
The event is the first of two at Don Haskins Center on July 18, with Mexican superstar Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. battling Marcos Reyes on Showtime later that night. Tickets for the afternoon card on CBS are available now and range in price from $25-50.
