Dominic Breazeale, Yasmany Consuegra Eyeing a Slugfest for PBC on NBC

It’s not every day that a matchup between two young, undefeated heavyweights with murderous punching power square off. Not in today’s boxing world and especially not on national television on a major free-air network in the afternoon.

That’s exactly what the world is being treated to Saturday on NBC.

As part of the Robert Guerrero-Aron Martinez contest for Premier Boxing Champions, two young, unbeaten monsters will try to see whose “0” will go. American Dominic Breazeale, a member of the 2012 Olympic team, has already fought 14 times as a pro. Only one of those 14 have been able to last the allotted distance.

Granted, Breazeale’s opposition hasn’t exactly been a murderer’s row of contenders, but he’s been acing virtually every test put in front of him. Back in March when he fought Puerto Rican Olympian Victor Bisbal, Breazeale was badly rocked early in the fight, but he stormed back and took his foe out in the fourth. His style and concussive power is what American fight fans covet in a heavyweight and Breazeale has it all in spades.

Standing in his path towards an eventual world championship is Cuban amateur standout Yasmany Consuegra, a multiple-time champion who also has dynamite in his fists. He’s the perfect opponent for the American -- and vice versa -- and it should be an explosive meeting, perfect for a Saturday afternoon of action.

“This is definitely my toughest test to date,” Breazeale said in a recent conference call. “Yasmany is the kind of guy who comes into the ring with a ton of confidence. We are both undefeated fighters and I was extremely excited when I got the call. Thanks to Al (Haymon) and NBC, I’ll be able to perform in front of the whole world, nationwide and I couldn’t ask for more. It’s a great stepping stone to get to the next level. I want to be considered the top heavyweight and to be the best, you gotta fight the top guys to get there.”

Consuegra (17-0, 14 KOs) agreed.

“This is definitely my toughest fight,” the Cuban said, but was quick to point out what he believes is a better overall pedigree. “Breazeale is a very good fighter. But I have a great amateur background as well. I fought the best of the best, obviously. The Cuban heavyweight program is much more difficult than the American heavyweight program. He was an Olympian but I won gold at a lot of amateur tournaments. I look forward to getting into the ring with Breazeale and see what he’s got, and to show him what I got.”

Both big men feel as though they are ready for the next step, to get away from taking on cannon fodder and journeymen. They both desire big fights and both expect the fight to end well before the allotted 10 rounds.

“I’ve got devastating punching power,” Breazeale said. “I’ve got power in my right and in my left. As long as I touch someone, they’re going down. I’ve been knocking people out since Day One.”

Consuegra, who likens himself a modern-day Felix Savon, countered Breazeale’s statement and pointed to his illustrious amateur background, but added that his power something not to be scoffed at.

This fight likely will come down to whoever makes the first mistake and if the other man can capitalize quickly enough. Both can end the fight with one shot with how confident they both are, fireworks are expected on NBC this Saturday.
