GBP on ESPN2 Weigh-in Results: Gamboa, Castellanos Clear Final Hurdle
It seems like ages ago that Yuriorkis Gamboa was considered one of
the brightest young talents in the sport of boxing. The Cuban
defector quickly amassed a stellar record and scooped up the WBA
featherweight crown, added the IBF version of the title and was on
the verge of taking over the lower weight classes.
But when Gamboa ran into Terence Crawford for the latter’s WBO lightweight title, “Bud” dominated him and stopped him in the ninth. That loss was nearly three years ago and “El Ciclon de Guantanamo” has only fought thrice; he hasn’t looked the same. Gamboa has proclaimed that his headlining bout on Friday night in the main event of the Golden Boy promotions on ESPN2 will be the start of his new career.
Gamboa (26-1, 17 KOs) is set to take on Robinson Castellanos and at
Thursday’s weigh-ins at the MGM Grand, both men were on point.
Castellanos (23-12, 13 KOs) had won two in a row, including a unanimous decision over former world champ Rocky Juarez, but the Mexican was topped in the seventh round by Oscar Escandon in his last outing back in March. He’s looking to add another former world titleholder to his resume and on the scale, he looked great. Castellanos came in officially at 133 pounds.
Gamboa, who outpointed Rene Alvarado in March, came in at a ready 133 pounds as well, setting the stage for what should be a solid night fisticuffs, the perfect lead-in event for the massive “Canelo” Alvarez versus Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. showdown on Saturday.
Friday’s action will go down live from inside the Chelsea Ballroom in The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. ESPN2 will broadcast the action beginning at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.
Abraham Lopez (126.5) vs. Jesus Rojas (126)
Yamaguchi Falcao (160) vs. Morgan Fitch (161)
