Gennady Golovkin Calls Kell Brook Showdown ‘The Biggest Fight of My Career’
One of boxing’s premier attractions climbs back into the ring when
Gennady
Golovkin faces Kell Brook in an intriguing showdown on Saturday
at the O2 Arena in London.
Golovkin (35-0, 32 KOs) will put his WBC, WBA and IBF middleweight titles on the line against the reigning IBF welterweight champion. Their bout, which airs live on HBO at 5:30 p.m. ET/2:30 p.m. PT, came together almost by accident. Golovkin’s proposed mega fight with Mexican superstar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez was postponed until at least late 2017, leaving “GGG” without an opponent. Brook, meanwhile, struggled to find meaningful opposition and coveted a big-time fight against one of the sport’s biggest names.
Golovkin can relate to British star’s plight, as he has chased a
matchup with Alvarez for some time now. Unable to fully capitalize
on his upset win over the then-unbeaten Shawn Porter two years ago,
Brook (36-0, 25 KOs) threw caution to the wind and challenged a man
two weight classes above his own.
“I respect Kell Brook and his team,” Golovkin said at the final post-fight press conference. “I know he understands for both of us this is the biggest fight. He looks ready. I’m ready. This is a big gift for boxing fans, not just in the UK but for all boxing fans.
Some in the media and many fans view Brook as an easy victory for Golovkin. However, the Kazakhstani knockout machine expects anything but a walk in the park. Brook’s tricky style and granite chin has resulted in a perfect record, and “GGG” sees a difficult test ahead.
“Kell Brook is a very good boxer, and I respect him for taking this fight; he is more than ready,” Golovkin said. “He is an undefeated champion, and this will be the biggest fight of my career. He is coming up from welterweight, so his speed will be a new test for me.”
Golovkin will be traveling to Brook’s hometown to fight in front of thousands of rabid fans, the majority of whom figure to be rooting against him.
“I hope our styles match well to give the fans a present,” he said. “I want to produce a dramatic show, and that is why I have come to London.”
