Jason Wilnis Takes Out Simon Marcus to Win Glory Middleweight Belt

In a wild and controversial Glory 33 Superfight Series main event, Jason Wilnis authored a sizable upset by stopping defending Glory middleweight champion Simon Marcus in the third round on Friday at the Sun National Bank Center in Trenton, New Jersey.

The majority of the fight saw the Canadian ripping knees and shins into Wilnis’ arms and body, as “Psycho” could not get any of his offense going. It seemed to be unfolding as an easy title defense for Marcus, but everything unraveled late in the second round.

Marcus (44-3-2, 24 KOs) backed himself into a corner and dropped his gloves, allowing the Dutch veteran to land at will. Marcus was never hurt as he taunted and laughed at the challenger, and though some punches landed cleanly, he was bobbing and weaving to avoid them. Referee Justin Greskiewicz then inexplicably halted the action and gave Marcus a standing eight count, most likely because he believed him to be in distress.

After Marcus protested the decision, he stormed out of his corner in the third to try and snatch back the point he lost. However, during a harrowing exchange with Wilnis, Marcus was clipped by a left hook. From there, Wilnis (29-6-1, 8 KOs) swarmed and scored a knockdown. Marcus climbed back to his feet and found himself engaged in a firefight he could not survive. Another standing eight count was administered, and when Marcus nearly collapsed again on rubbery legs, Greskiewicz waved off the fight. The official time of the TKO came at 1:14, allowing Wilnis to claim the middleweight title in the process.

In other action, Chi Lewis-Parry (8-1, 4 KOs) destroyed Anthony McDonald (7-1, 6 KOs) in their heavyweight encounter, scoring two knockdowns en route to a TKO, as “The Joker” failed to answer the bell for the third round; Francois Ambang (17-6, 6 KOs) earned a unanimous decision over Daniel Morales (0-3) in a welterweight bout; featherweight Kevin Vannostrand (13-1, 10 KOs) pounded on David Moore (6-2, 6 KOs) and stopped him 35 ticks into the second round; Jessica Gladstone (6-6, 2 KOs) toppled Daniela Graf (24-5-1, 2 KOs) via majority decision to advance to the semifinals of the Glory women’s super bantamweight grand prix; Zarrukh Adashev (8-2, 2 KOs) edged Amine Ballafrikh (8-4, 5 KOs) via unanimous decision in a bantamweight duel; and Jennie Nedell (7-3) bested Anna Shearer (3-2) via split decision.
