Jorge Linares to Defend Lightweight Titles Against Luke Campbell Sep. 23

Boxing fans won’t get much time rest following what is expected to be the fight of the year between Saul Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin on Sep. 16. A week later, one of the best boxers in the world will come to the United States for the first time in three years, as Jorge Linares will collide with Luke Campbell.

The battle will be televised live on Sep. 23 via HBO’s Boxing After Dark series and will take place at the Forum in Inglewood, Calif. The action will be broadcast live beginning at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT.

Linares has captured world titles in three separate weight classes in his storied career. After winning titles at featherweight and super featherweight, the Venezuelan resident of Tokyo snatched up the WBC lightweight crown before adding the WBA version to his collection. “El Nino” is the reigning Ring Magazine champ at 135 pounds as well, and all of his belts will be at stake against Campbell.

“I am excited to make my return to the United States and to headline an HBO show for the first time," Linares (42-3, 27 KOs) said. “I know Luke Campbell is a tough competitor with an incredible amateur and professional background, but I am confident that I will emerge victorious on Sept. 23.”

Campbell (17-1, 14 KOs) captured Olympic gold for his native England in 2012. While he hasn’t achieved what Linares has in the pro ranks thus far, the Yorkshire fighter has picked up a few regional lightweight belts along the way. Campbell is coming off an impressive ninth-round stoppage of Darleys Perez in April and hopes to have similar success against Linares, who is the best opponent he’ll have faced up to this point.

“It's an honor to be fighting Jorge Linares for the WBA world title and Ring Magazine titles in one of the biggest fights in the division.” said Campbell. “I've worked my way from Olympic champion to the No.1 spot in the WBA and WBC rankings, and I feel now is the time to take my chance. I have tremendous respect for Jorge and this is going to be an unbelievable fight but this is the opportunity I have been waiting for as a professional and I must and will take it on September 23.”

A co-main event and full undercard will be announced soon.
