Lloyd Woodard: One Tough Cupcake

By Sherdog.com Staff Apr 5, 2012

Lloyd “Cupcake” Woodard, on “The Savage Dog Show,” explaining how he got his nickname:

“I love the name. I love it. My coach gave it to me. It was my first fight, and you know with your first fight, you’re all nervous. I had never done anything like this before. I did amateur boxing kind of, or smokers, but I went to Klamath Falls, Oregon. I was with my coach [Matt Powers]. … He’s a great coach. He wears a kilt out to the ring all the time. You see this guy with a kilt in my corner, that’s Matt Powers. He’s the Irish one, but he said, ‘Let’s call you Pretty Boy Lloyd.’ I was like, ‘I don’t really want to be like someone else and take somebody’s name like Pretty Boy Floyd,’ even though he’s an amazing boxer. I love watching his fights. But I wanted to pick the name so I was like, ‘We’ve got to go with something else.’ He was like, ‘Don’t worry about it. I put Cupcake down on the name and you’re just going to go with that and you can change it later if you want to.’ I thought it was kind of funny. Even when the announcer came up to talk to me, he was like, ‘What’s your nickname?’ I thought he’d already wrote it down on all my papers and I didn’t want to confuse anyone, so I was like, ‘Put down Cupcake. Yeah, it’s Cupcake.’ … And then after I smashed [the other fighter] and beat him up, everybody was like, ‘You just got beat up by a guy named Cupcake.’ It kind of stuck. Now I’m just starting to change the whole thought process when it comes to cupcakes. There are some tough cupcakes out there, and I’m one of them.”
