Lutter, MacDonald Map Northern Course

“The Ultimate Fighter” Season 4 middleweight winner Travis Lutter will tangle with fellow UFC castaway Jason MacDonald in the co-main event at Maximum Fighting Championship 22 “Payoff” on Oct. 2 at the River Cree Resort and Casino in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Lutter (9-5), 36, has fought only twice since November 2006. A Brazilian jiu-jitsu black who once took a round from UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva, he succumbed to strikes against Rich Franklin at UFC 83 some 15 months ago. Victories against Patrick Cote and Jose “Pele” Landi-Jons highlight his resume.

A surprising casualty of UFC roster cuts, MacDonald (21-12) has dropped back-to-back bouts and three of his last four. The 34-year-old Canadian last appeared at UFC 97 in April, when he was finished by first-round elbows from Nate Quarry. MacDonald has secured 17 of his 21 career victories by submission and holds notable wins against former World Extreme Cagefighting titleholder Jason Lambert, Chris Leben and Ed Herman.

“I’ve spoken to Jason personally about this fight, and I can tell from his demeanor that he has some bad intentions for Lutter,” MFC President Mark Pavelich said in a news release. “Frankly, it has been very rare throughout his career to hear Jason talk like this, so it’s easy to tell that he is gearing up for it. And I know from Lutter’s camp that he is primed for this big opportunity. We couldn’t ask for anything more in setting up this clash.”
