Miguel Cotto Set to Fight Yoshihiro Kamegai on Aug. 26

Four-division world champion Miguel Cotto hasn’t fought in 18 months, in part because his scheduled February fight with James Kirkland was canceled. However, the Puerto Rican superstar will climb into the ring in August to try and capture another world title to add to his collection.

Golden Boy promotions announced Wednesday that Cotto will square off against Yoshihiro Kamegai on Aug. 26. The bout will headline an HBO World Championship Boxing event held at StubHub Center in Carson, Calif., just outside Los Angeles.

Cotto, who has locked horns with the likes of Floyd Mayweather, Shane Mosley, Sergio Martinez, Zab Judah, Manny Pacquiao and countless others, hasn’t fought since he dropped a unanimous 12-round decision to Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in November 2015 in Las Vegas. His fight with Kamegai will be for the vacant WBO super welterweight title and he’s anxious to get back into the ring.

“I'm very excited to be back and showcase a high-level fight for the fans,” Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) said. “Kamegai is a great, tough fighter, but I will be ready for him and to capture the world title. I can't wait to start training for this fight and get back in the ring on August 26.”

Kamegai, who has going head-to-head with such foes as Robert Guerrero and Alfonso Gomez, as well as two recent wars with Jesus Soto Karass, is primed for his first-ever world title fight. The Tokyo native is always in exciting fights and he’s ready to take on the biggest name of his career thus far.

“I fully understand who I am going to be in the ring against, but Cotto's record and history won't matter once we are toe-to-toe,” Kamegai (27-3-2, 24 KOs) said. “I am looking forward to giving fans the kind of aggressive fight that they have seen from me before and having my arm raised in victory.”

The co-main event and a full undercard, as well as broadcast details, will be announced in the coming weeks.
