New Documentary Explores “The History of Submission Fighting”

From wrestling in ancient Greece to the development of judo, sambo and Brazilian jiu-jitsu, the grappling arts have enjoyed a spectacular evolution over human history. This is the story that “The History of Submission Fighting” is here to tell.

The new vehicle is the brainchild of executive producers Mohammed Al Hosani and combat sports documentarian Bobby Razak. The film tracks the roots of grappling through its earliest forms, arriving in the modern day with the creation of the Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC) Submission Wrestling World Championship, the modern Olympics of no-gi submission grappling.

ADCC, founded by His Highness Sheikh Tahnoon Bin Zayed Al Nahyan in 1998, proved a harder task to accomplish than Sheikh Tahnoon originally imagined, yet proved more fruitful in the end. Over the last 15-plus years and 10 editions, ADCC has become the most prestigious event in submission grappling and helped turn no-gi grappling into a truly international sport.

The 11th instalment of the ADCC World Championship is set for September 2015 in Manaus, Brazil. The event in the heart of the Amazon will mark just ADCC's second trip to Brazil, having staged ADCC 2003 in Sao Paulo. A trio of superfights -- Matt Hughes-Renzo Gracie, Mario Sperry-Ricardo Liborio and Andre Galvao-”Cyborg” Roberto Abreu -- has already been announced for the event.

“I've always found myself representing the arts in mediums I did not have previous experience in and this one is no different,” said Al Hosani. “I am doing this movie for my country, for the person I look up to, for the martial arts I am passionate about and to help document one of the greatest stories to ever come out of the martial arts world. Hopefully, I succeed in raising awareness to an art that has changed the way of life for many of the youth in the UAE and the rest of the world.”

“I have always been a martial arts addict since I was a young boy in England and I started making movies about mixed martial arts, but this will be the first time I delve more specifically into the submission aspect of MMA,” added Razak. “I look forward to telling this amazing story to many people around the world. I am sure it will be the main source of history for anyone wanting to learn more about the art of submission fighting and the role of Abu Dhabi in the rise of the sport.”

The documentary's official trailer is set for release on Monday, Oct. 20, and will set the stage for the project's release, tentatively slated for fall 2015. Should it prove successful, “The History of Submission Fighting” could result in a series of grappling-related documentaries to follow.
