By Marcelo Alonso Mar 18, 2013

PVT Mag 40 features a cover story on Wanderlei Silva, who returned to Japan earlier this month with an electrifying knockout. “The Axe Murderer,” who made his name in Japan’s Pride Fighting Championships organization, took down American hero Brian Stann in yet another unforgettable showing in the Land of the Rising Sun.

TRT Controversy in MMA

Is it cheating, or simply a matter of health and hormonal balance? Testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) has been a huge topic of debate and controversy amongst MMA fans and fighters in recent months. Several fighters have used therapeutic doses of the male sex hormone due to alleged deficiency in its production, but many disagree with TRT, believing it confers considerable advantage to its users. PVT Mag spoke with experts who opined about the controversial practice for this month’s issue.

Andre Pederneiras: Dotting the i’s and Crossing the t’s

February was a busy month for Nova Uniao leader Andre Pederneiras, who had three athletes putting belts on the line, including Eduardo Dantas against former teammate Marcos Galvao. Moreover, the team’s biggest name, Jose Aldo, found himself in a bit of controversy with Dana White, which was eventually settled the way the UFC boss likes best: with his champion asking for big challengers. In this month’s issue, Pederneiras recounts the beginning of the year, which is already full of stories despite having just begun.

Alonso’s Relics: Pride 24

After losing to Dan Henderson in one of the most hotly contested fights in MMA history, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira failed to win what was then the biggest prize of his career ($250,000). He also lost his undefeated record and had to endure the teasing of the American, who sent a crate of beer to Nogueira’s room. Almost three years and many nights of lost sleep later, Rodrigo finally got his rematch at Pride 24.

Held in Fukuoka, Japan, the show also featured Antonio Rogerio Nogueira vs. Guy Mezger, Murilo Rua vs. Kevin Randleman and Rodrigo Gracie vs. Yuki Sasaki. PVT Editor Marcelo Alonso was in attendance and recalls the night’s many stories, both in the ring and from backstage.
