Sherdog MMA Pick’Em: UFC on FX 4, UFC 147 Final Report

By Sherdog.com Staff Jun 25, 2012

Ricardo Lamas ignored the odds.

The underrated featherweight contender knocked the air out of 92 percent of players in Sherdog.com’s MMA Pick’Em fantasy game when he captured a unanimous decision from the world-ranked Hatsu Hioki at UFC on FX 4 “Maynard vs. Guida” on Friday at the Revel Casino in Atlantic City, N.J. Lamas was one of the biggest underdogs on the card.

Lamas (12-2, 3-0 UFC) delivered the strikes of significance -- including a series of kicks to the upper and lower lead leg -- and threatened Hioki with one guillotine choke after another from his back. The 30-year-old Chicagoan has won all three of his fights since crossing the WEC bridge to the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

A majority of participants found paydirt with their picks for much of the rest of the 12-fight card: Gray Maynard-Clay Guida (71 percent took Maynard), Sam Stout-Spencer Fisher (90 percent took Stout), Brian Ebersole-T.J. Waldburger (93 percent took Ebersole), Ramsey Nijem-C.J. Keith (77 percent took Nijem), Rick Story-Brock Jardine (95 percent took Story), Steven Siler-Joey Gambino (79 percent took Siler), Matt Brown-Luis Ramos (89 percent took Brown) and Dan Miller-Ricardo Funch (93 percent took Miller).

However, there were a handful of miscues from the masses, as Cub Swanson wiped out “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 9 winner Ross Pearson (71 percent picked Pearson), Chris Camozzi downed Nick Catone (76 percent picked Catone) and American Top Team’s Ken Stone edged Dustin Pague (85 percent picked Pague).

Within Sherdog MMA Pick’Em, players earn points based on correct match-by-match predictions for a given event. A maximum of 210 points can be picked up in a single match.

Players are awarded 50 points for each correct pick, along with 30 additional points if they choose the correct method: decision, knockout/technical knockout or submission. If the method involves a finish, 30 additional points will be awarded to players who choose the correct round in which the finish occurs. Players are also allowed five boosts per event through which they can notch an additional 100 points for outcomes about which they feel particularly certain. However, any incorrect selections involving boosts will cost the player 50 points.

With 10,980 points, “captain monkeypants” currently leads the Sherdog MMA Pick’Em standings. He has picked 87 of his 134 bouts correctly, 34 of them perfect, with a 76.2 percent success rate on his boosts. The leader was successful on seven of his 12 selections for UFC on FX 4 and nine of his 11 selections for UFC 147.
