This Day in MMA History: Nov. 18

On Nov. 18, 2006, the Ultimate Fighting Championship was in Sacramento, California, for UFC 65.

In the main event, Georges St. Pierre challenged Matt Hughes for his welterweight championship in a rematch of their thrilling interim welterweight title match at UFC 50, where Hughes was able to tap the Canadian with a last-second armbar at the end of the first round. In their second meeting, history did not repeat itself. St. Pierre shut down the legendary wrestler’s offense and dominated him on the feet en route to a second round knockout.

The co-main event saw Tim Sylvia defend his heavyweight title with a unanimous decision win over Jeff Monson. Also on the main card, Drew McFedries TKO’d Alessio Sakara, Brandon Vera TKO’d Frank Mir, and Joe Stevenson submitted Dokonjonosuke Mishima.

UFC 65 also featured Nick Diaz beating Gleison Tibau by TKO on the prelims.

The card had 14,666 in attendance and had a reported 500,000 buyrate.
