Alexander Gustafsson will meet Mauricio “Shogun” Rua on Dec. 8 at UFC on Fox 5 in Seattle, where a victory could place the 25-year-old Swede on the fast track to a light heavyweight title shot.
Gustafsson owns a gaudy 14-1 record, with 12 finishes, yet some wonder whether or not he has earned his place among the elite at 205 pounds. He has followed a submission loss to Phil Davis in April 2010 with five consecutive victories over Cyrille Diabate, James Te Huna, Matt Hamill, Vladimir Matyushenko and Thiago Silva. Perhaps a win over Rua would sway the rest of the doubters.
Other topics of interest on the Sherdog.net forums this week include a continuing discussion on female fighters and their place at the UFC table, Cung Le’s improving resume at 185 pounds and trainer Mike Winkeljohn’s high praise for light heavyweight champion Jon Jones’ development as a striker.
