Unbeaten contender David Benavidez won the most important fight of his still-blossoming career Saturday night as he stopped rugged veteran Rogelio “Porky” Medina in the eighth. The battle anchored the latest edition of PBC on FS1 and his stoppage electrified the crowd inside Laredo Energy Arena in Laredo, Texas.

Benavidez (18-0, 17 KOs) was relentless from the start and swarmed the former world title challenger with bombs to the head and body. “Porky” was dropped at the end of the sixth and then again in the seventh from a body shot. Benavidez unloaded another barrage in the eighth, sending Medina (37-8, 31 KOs) to the canvas for the final time, ending the drubbing at the 1:01 mark. The win allowed Benavidez to earn a crack at the WBC super middleweight title later this year if everything pans out.

Featherweight contender Jorge Lara tore apart Mario Briones (28-6-2, 22 KOs) and stopped him in the third of the PBC on FS1 co-feature. Lara (29-0-2, 21 KOs) felled his foe in the second and then finished him off in the third with a barrage of punches, forcing the ref to halt the mugging.

Finally, Austin Dulay (10-0, 7 KOs) dropped Jose Esquivel three times in the the first two stanza of their junior lightweight affair, but he couldn’t put him away. Dulay wound up coasting to the end, easily winning a unanimous decision via tallies of 59-52 across the board. Esquivel fell to 10-6 with 2 KOs.
