PETA Nominates UFC Vets Shields, Corassani, Danzig for Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrity of 2013
By: Sherdog.com Staff
Like most professional mixed martial artists, Jake Shields, Akira Corassani and Mac Danzig adhere to strict diets when training.
By eating plant-based fare alone, the trio of UFC veterans has been nominated for Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrity of 2013 by peta2, the youth division of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. The full list of nominees, which includes the likes of Anne Hathaway, Kristen Wiig, Jared Leto and Russell Brand, can be viewed here.
Voting for the contest ends on Aug. 16, and one male and one female winner will be announced on Aug. 19.
Danzig last competed at UFC on Fox 8, losing to Melvin Guillard via second-round knockout in a lightweight affair. Corassani was expected to face Mike Thomas Brown at UFC’s inaugural Fox Sports 1 card in Boston before an injury forced him to withdraw from the bout. Shields, meanwhile, is rumored to face Demian Maia on an upcoming UFC card in 2013. The former Strikeforce champion also appears in peta2’s online game, Cage Fight: Knock Out Animal Abuse.

Weekend Rundown: ‘Hurricane’ Harris Upset in Post-UFC Debut
By: Chris Nelson

Former UFC middleweight Gerald Harris came up short in his first outing since being released by the promotion, as the “Hurricane” dropped a unanimous decision to lesser-known James Head on Friday. The bout was the main event of Xtreme Fight Night 2 at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Tulsa, Okla.
A pupil of Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Rafael Lovato, Jr., Head reportedly used both effective guard work and kickboxing to earn scores of 29-28 and 30-27 (twice), upping his professional record to 7-1.
Harris, a Tulsa native, was suddenly and surprisingly dismissed by Zuffa last November following a lackluster decision loss to Maiquel Jose Falcao Goncalves at UFC 123. Prior to that defeat, the 31-year-old had won 10 straight fights and earned “Knockout of the Night” bonuses in two of his three Octagon appearances. Read more
