Cain Velasquez’s Trainer Thinks Antonio Silva Is Being Underestimated
By: Sherdog.com Staff
Trainer Bob Cook, on “The Savage Dog Show,” discussing Cain Velasquez’s UFC 146 bout against Antonio Silva: “I think if [Daniel Cormier] hadn’t have done what he did to [Silva], there would be much different talk [about] this fight. If he had never fought D.C. and this was coming off that Fedor fight and he was now fighting Cain, the hype that would be on this fight would be incredible. Everybody would be saying, ‘This is going to be an eliminator fight. It’s going to be this huge fight.’ But because D.C. took care of him the way that he did, I think people are underestimating Antonio Silva on what his accomplishments have been in the past.”

‘Bigfoot’ Silva’s Imperial Athletics Departure Coincides with Overeem’s Arrival
By: Gleidson Venga
Wins over former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski and onetime Pride Fighting Championships heavyweight king Fedor Emelianenko cemented Antonio Silva as one of the world’s Top 10 heavyweights. Then came his knockout defeat to Daniel Cormier. As Silva primes for his move to the Ultimate Fighting Championship, the Team Nogueira representative discussed in an exclusive interview with Sherdog.com his departure from Imperial Athletics and its relation to Alistair Overeem’s arrival at the fledgling Florida dojo:
“I hope it’s good for him and for the team because I have several friends who are part of [the] ‘Blackzilians,’ and I always wish to see them do well. In terms of what he has to gain there, I can say that his jiu-jitsu and wrestling will greatly improve. Flavius [Silva] is a quality jiu-jitsu coach, just as Mike Van Arsdale is with wrestling. The truth is he’ll be fighting a big friend of mine [in Junior dos Santos], and, in going to the UFC, I’d be on a collision course with Overeem. Once I knew he had signed with the ‘Blackzilians,’ I had already arranged another place to do my training, and it was at Team Nogueira.”

‘Curse of Fedor’ Continues with Silva
By: Jason Probst
Antonio Silva was destroyed by Daniel Cormier. | File Photo: Sherdog.com
When I wrote about ”The Curse of Fedor” in June, I was pretty sure Antonio Silva would buck the trend of Fedor Emelianenko opponents having letdown performances against future foes after giving the Russian a tough go.
However, with his one-sided blowout loss to Daniel Cormier in the Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix semifinals on Saturday in Cincinnati, Silva definitely fits the bill.
The defeat of Silva -- who masterfully used his size, crushing top game and ground-and-pound to get a corner stoppage against Emelianenko in the grand prix’s opening round -- only reinforces the Curse’s effects. What’s interesting is the reflection of fans on Silva’s poor showing against Cormier in relation to what his victory over Emelianenko means.
It is one thing to admit that the once-great Emelianenko is obviously having problems against world-class competition but entirely another when those fighters perform poorly after giving themselves an unprecedented career boost by daring to compete, or even win, against the once-invincible Russian.
What it means depends on who you ask. For me, it only reinforces the fact that Emelianenko is the most accomplished heavyweight in the history of the sport and the best that has ever competed at that weight. I am confident that the Cain Velasquez-Junior dos Santos winner on Nov. 12 will pose a strong argument against Emelianenko on that second claim. Until then, let us appreciate the Curse as it stands.

By: TJ De Santis
If you missed tonight's Sherdog Radio Network "Rewind" show, you need to re-prioritize your Sunday night schedule.

Jack Encarnacao returned to The SRN live for another edition of "The Rewind." Encarnacao looked back at this week in mixed martial arts, took a step back to really breakdown the announcement of the Velasquez-Dos Santos main event on Fox, and sat down with Strikeforce heavyweight Daniel Cormier to talk about his life and career.
Joining Jack was former Sherdog.com editor Loretta Hunt. The veteran MMA reporter talked for 30 minutes analyzing the UFC's main event for their November debut on Fox. Jack and Loretta breakdown why the UFC and Fox made the decision to go with one title fight in the one hour special, what this fight means for the fighters involved, and what impact it could have on the sport as a whole.
Daniel Cormier is featured in this week's "Sunday Sitdown" just days before his fight with Antonio Silva in the Strikeforce heavyweight world grand prix. The American Kickboxing Academy product talks about the hardships he has faced inside and outside of the cage. From the loss of his father, coming up just short of an olympic medal, to losing his three month old daughter in an automobile accident. Cormier digs deep in this emotional, and insightful interview.

Quick Quote: ‘Bigfoot’ Thankful Fedor Not Retiring
By: Marcelo Alonso
Former EliteXC heavyweight champion Antonio Silva on Fedor Emelianenko’s decision to move forward with his MMA career despite back-to-back losses:

“Thank God. It’s such a waste for a fighter like Fedor to be retired by 34. Anderson Silva lost. GSP lost. [Antonio Rodrigo] ‘Minotauro’ [Nogueira] … all of them lost and they didn’t stop fighting because it’s part of the game. I’m sure Fedor will shine again soon. I just hope that it’s not with me.”
Silva stopped Emelianenko on a second-round technical knockout in the first round of the 2011 Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix in February. -
