  • Ben Askren’s Bellator Blog, Part 2

Bellator welterweight champion Ben Askren (www.twitter.com/BenAskren) will blog his thoughts and experiences for Sherdog.com as he prepares to defend his 170-pound title against Season 4 tournament winner Jay Hieron at Bellator 56 in Kansas City, Kan. Bellator 56 takes place this Saturday, Oct. 29, on MTV2 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

Well, the last 24 hours have been significantly more interesting than my last blog so at least I can entertain you guys.

Thursday, I had to do a bunch of media stuff; no one really likes to do it but it is a part of the job, and I did it with a smile on my face. My weight was great -- only 179 when I started my weight cut. For the first workout, I grappled with one of my corners and friends Alan Belcher for 25 minutes and got a good sweat going. Then I threw on the plastics and sweats and hit some mitts for about 20 minutes. Even with all the extra clothes on I still felt strangely crisp with my combinations. I ended up losing four-and-a-half pounds and rewarded myself with a small dinner.

  • Askren: MMA Requires Fighters to Develop Skills Beyond Their Base By: Sam Genovese

Bellator Fighting Championships welterweight titleholder Ben Askren does not want to be viewed as a wrestler who is afraid to leave his comfort zone. He recognizes that many of his peers have relied too heavily on their base skill and have suffered as a result. In a recent interview with Sherdog.com, Askren discussed the importance of developing one’s secondary skills:

Jon Fitch wasn’t a great college wrestler by any means, and he has made it far in mixed martial arts. At some point, he had to leave his comfort zone to get to where he is. I watch a guy like Jake Rosholt; he was a three-time NCAA champion. In his losses in the UFC, he tapped so fast. Honestly, if you put me in a triangle, I’m going to fight you for a minute -- minimum. He looked very uncomfortable still in the standup. Then he got [Matt Horwich] to the ground but didn’t get on top of him. He’s a wrestler, but he doesn’t look comfortable standing and doesn’t look comfortable on the ground. What is he comfortable with? I think you see wrestlers stuck in that box, but it’s not just wrestlers; it’s everyone. You see jiu-jitsu guys who just want to grapple and you see boxers who just want to box.”

Askren will defend his Bellator crown against former International Fight League champion Jay Hieron at Bellator 56 on Saturday in Kansas City, Kan.

ET/PT.

I hit the road to Kansas City today. My in-laws actually live there, so I decided to arrive a few days early to get the drive out of the way. After the fight, I am going to stop by Columbia, Mo., and check out my old stomping grounds and maybe stop by a few wrestling practices as the Mizzou team gets ready for the upcoming season.

This will be my first fight since I moved back to Milwaukee on Aug. 1, coming home after nine years was a great feeling. I actually just bought a house here, so I feel like this is really my home. Going to a great MMA gym with great coaches and training partners every day is a great feeling. Thinking back on it, my decision to move back home and pursue MMA full-time was a decision that I feel I should have made earlier in my career.

  • SDS: McCall & Hieron By: TJ De Santis

  • Askren: I Can Take Down Anyone in MMA By: Sherdog.com Staff

Ben Askren (Pictured), on “Beatdown,” discussing his strategy for transitioning to MMA:

“I know I can take anyone in mixed martial arts down, period. I can pretty much take down anyone in the world. I might not be able to beat anyone in the world, especially in freestyle wrestling. In folkstyle, I really honestly think that I could probably beat anyone in the world in the sport of folkstyle wrestling. So when I got in the sport of mixed martial arts, I knew for a fact that I’d be able to take anyone down that I want. So after that, my next point of emphasis is jiu-jitsu. If I can take anyone down and no one can submit me, then already at that point, I’m a very, very difficult person to beat. I got some black belts and I said, ‘Come on. Submit me as many times as you can, and I’m going to figure out how to get out of it.’ Right away I’m a tough person to beat because I’ve got good cardio. I’m not going to quit. I’m going to take you down, and you can’t submit me. … Now I’m starting to work on my hands just in case there’s someone who I do prefer to stand up with.”

  • Talking MMA With Rapper N.O.R.E. By: Chris Nelson

Thursday evening, I heard the familiar pling that accompanies an incoming email on my phone. I picked up the device, glanced absentmindedly at the latest press release from Bellator Fighting Championships, and tossed it back down on my desk before doing an entirely unintentional, slapstick comedy-style double-take.

“Super-Star Rapper N.O.R.E. (Noreaga) Will Perform Ben Askren's Walkout Song at Bellator 33 In Philadelphia,” read the subject line.

The hip-hop fan in me was fascinated to see the Queensbridge rap don’s name associated with mixed martial arts, however tenuously, but this pairing required some explanation. Despite being fairly familiar with his oeuvre, I’d never taken Mr. Noreaga for an MMA fan. Boxing, sure -- “my dad, he was a boxer, God,” he explained on the track “Sometimes” -- but MMA? Furthermore, I’d prejudged Ben Askren, with his trademark wild mop of frizzy hair, to be more of a Phish guy.
