  • Radio: Phan, Saunders By: TJ De Santis

Live radio was in full effect Friday on The Sherdog Radio Network with new episodes of "Beatdown" and "The Savage Dog Show." Joining them were fighters Nam Phan and Ben Saunders.

Jon Luther and I were joined by UFC featherweight Nam Phan. The "TUF" veteran talked about his decision win over Leonard Garcia at UFC 136. Phan talked about strategy, the judges' decision, and if he thinks Garcia is truly fighting to his full potential.

On Friday's "Savage Dog Show" Greg Savage and Jeff Sherwood welcomed Bellator welterweight tournament finalist Ben Saunders to the program. "Killa B" talked about his latest win, fighting in the Bellator promotion, and who he would like to see win between Jay Hieron and Bellator champ Ben Askren.

  • Ben Saunders' Bellator Blog, Part 3

'Killa B' is hoping to make another piece of his 'art' at Bellator 53. | Photo: Dave Mandel

American Top Team fighter Ben Saunders (www.twitter.com/bensaundersMMA) will blog his thoughts and experiences for Sherdog.com as he takes part in Bellator Fighting Championships’ fifth-season welterweight tournament, which continues at Bellator 53 this Saturday, Oct. 8, on MTV2 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

Well, it's almost that time again. I will admit that this tournament format is definitely a very interesting way to get a title shot. There are so many factors involved, and it really seems like the true Iron Man comes out on top.

It causes most fighters to possibly come up with different game plans or strategies that they might possibly not normally utilize. It might also make some people try to come up with ways to take the least damage yet get the win or to maybe go balls to the wall to try and finish the fights fast and fierce to move on to the next round with the mindset of damaging their opponent before they themselves get damaged. It definitely leads to a lot of anticipation for the fans of not knowing what to expect.

Now, me on the other hand, I look at it a third way: I personally say, “What tournament?” There are no other fights just the one in front of me. I don't want to change who I am and how I fight by thinking ahead of myself. In this sport of MMA there is no "sure thing”; one overhand right from a scared nobody with their eyes closed could end the fight against a world champion.

Are fans in for another Ben Saunders bloodbath at Bellator 49? | Photo: Dave Mandel

American Top Team fighter Ben Saunders (www.twitter.com/bensaundersMMA) will blog his thoughts and experiences for Sherdog.com as he takes part in Bellator Fighting Championships’ fifth-season welterweight tournament, which kicks off with Bellator 49 this Saturday, Sept. 10, on MTV2 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

Well, I finally boarded my plane to Atlantic City, N.J. Due to weather issues, my flight got pushed back about two hours. I hate airports and flying, but it’s part of the game, so I take it in stride. Originally, I got seated next to an old guy who was all about picking his nose. Seemed like a coal miner; it was pretty disturbing.

However, I told the flight attendant if they had an Emergency Exit seat available, I’d be happy to save everyone’s life if we had an emergency. She laughed, and, lucky for me, there was one open, so now I am sitting with more leg room, thank god. These planes just aren’t made for us tall, lanky folk. My camp is over, and I couldn’t be happier with how it went. I feel very well-prepared. My weight is good, so I’ll begin my cut on Thursday night and finish it up on Friday.

ET/PT.

Potentially fighting three fights in three months is something that could be straight out of a movie. It brings me back to the good old days when tournaments were the norm, rather than something that seems to be obsolete in modern MMA.

I’m fired up to be part of Bellator’s fifth season and to fight in their welterweight tournament. I honestly feel this tournament is stacked with talent and there is no doubt in my mind that this will be the hardest test I have ever faced in my career. Not only is this a huge honor, but it is the challenge I have always wanted and somewhat felt would be a part of my career since watching MMA when it first began. I may have been a little kid when I first thought of this, but nonetheless, being involved in a tournament has always been on my “to do” list. I’m very grateful to have the chance to really see what I can accomplish in my lifetime.

Now, with that being said, I also realize how crazy this might seem to some people. The tournament is definitely not the healthiest approach to someone’s career or body. It could easily go very, very wrong. But I am not a normal person with normal thoughts and opinions. So, to me, this is what life is all about. Obstacles that many may see as impossible, I see as opportunities.

  • UFC 117 Prelims: Hallman Bests Saunders By: Sherdog.com Staff

Dennis Hallman took a unanimous decision over Ben Saunders to kick off Saturday’s UFC 117 prelims at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, Calif.

Hallman, who upped his record to 45-13-2 (1 NC), controlled the first two rounds with takedowns from the clinch and control in the top position. Saunders (8-3-2) took a mild beating from Hallman’s punches and elbows from the top, but rallied to claim the third round on Sherdog.com’s unofficial scorecard.

The official judges saw the contest 29-28 (twice) and 30-27.
