  • Bryan Caraway: Advice to ‘Coast’ Against Mizugaki Blown Out of Proportion By: Sherdog.com Staff

Bryan Caraway, on “Beatdown,” discussing the instructions he received before the third round of his bout against Takeya Mizugaki, which included a much-criticized comment from girlfriend Miesha Tate that he could “coast”:

“That was absolutely blown completely out of proportion. First of all, Miesha’s not my lead corner. She’s there for kind of mental, emotional support. She just happened to be wearing the microphone. My lead corner was somebody else and she just repeats what they say because I can hear her. I know her voice. I tune in. So all she is is just a repeater box. All she does is repeat what they say, and she was repeating what she was told to say.

“Another point is coasting to me is completely different than somebody else. I’m not a striker. ... [I’m not someone] who sits on the outside and looks pretty and jabs and tends to run away. Coasting for me is don’t go in there with your head down and brawl and throw punches and wrestle and get in crazy scrambles. Coasting for me is completely different than what other people think coasting means.

“People can’t criticize and say, ‘Oh, he was coasting. That’s why he lost.’ Mizugaki came out in round three knowing he lost round one and two. Regardless of what the judges said, he knew he lost it. [Mizugaki and his camp] had actually came back to my corner after the fight and told me that they thought I had won the fight. ... They were telling him in the corner that they thought he had lost round one and two and he came out tough in round three.”

  • Podcast: Pat Healy, Bryan Caraway, Greg Jackson By: Sherdog.com Staff

TJ De Santis and Jeff Sherwood returned to the Sherdog Radio Network Monday for another edition of “Beatdown.” Joining them were UFC 159 luminaries Pat Healy, Bryan Caraway, and Jon Jones’ coach, Greg Jackson.

The Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., played host to a bizarre night of mixed martial arts action. Healy opened the night on pay-per-view with an upset submission victory over hometown favorite Jim Miller. The former Strikeforce number one contender joined De Santis and Sherwood to talk about his return to the UFC seven years after his Octagon debut. Healy recounts the excitement leading up to the bout, if he felt this was a return or his true debut in the UFC, and what it took to dispatch Miller.

Caraway stepped up to face Johnny Bedford on short notice. “The Ultimate Fighter” alum chats about his decision to take the fight, what it was like facing a friend and former training partner, and what it’s like fighting in the shadow of his girlfriend, fellow UFC fighter Miesha Tate.

Jones was victorious over Chael Sonnen in dominant fashion in the main event of UFC 159. Coach Greg Jackson shares his experience being in the corner of the UFC light heavyweight champion. Jackson discusses the mindset of Jones entering the fight, the game plan, and the grotesque injury to Jones’ foot, which left his toe mangled.

De Santis and Sherwood also took listener calls, emails, and tweets. The guys also take a look at officiating coming out of the UFC 159 event and what can be done to deal with eye injuries more efficiently. Listen to “Beatdown” here
