  • Video: UFC’s Conor McGregor ‘Full Blast’ By: Sherdog.com Staff

    The Ultimate Fighting Championship mic’d up Conor McGregor last October when the promotion traveled to Manchester, England, for UFC Fight Night “Machida vs. Munoz.” Hear (and see) how the popular Irish featherweight reacted to Norman Parke’s three-round bout with Jon Tuck.

  • C.J. Tuttle Joins Press Row By: Jordan Breen

    Every Wednesday, Administrative Editor Jordan Breen welcomes a member of the mixed martial arts media into “Press Row” on the Sherdog.com blog. This week, Breen is joined by Sherdog.com Associate Editor C.J. Tuttle.

    Breen and Tuttle take stock of the UFC's needle movers in the sub-lightweight categories following considerable mainstream media attention for Ronda Rousey and Conor McGregor's latest violent exploit in the Octagon. The pair touch on why ideas about Rousey abandoning MMA for the silver screen are misguided, why MMA is more akin to pro-wrestling when it comes to crossing over into Hollywood and the most interesting parts of public reaction to the Olympic bronze medalist and Irish upstart.

    The Sherdog editors also discuss McGregor's recently announced UFC 178 bout with Dustin Poirier, featherweight champion Jose Aldo's neck injury, how it changes his rematch with Chad Mendes, why it could end up being a blessing in disguise for the Team Alpha Male product. Also on the slate: a less-than-flattering appraisal of 2008 Beijing Games freestyle wrestling gold medalist Henry Cejudo's MMA career to date amidst rumors of negotiating with the UFC.

  • The Forum Threads: UFC Fight Night ‘McGregor vs. Brandao’ By: Jeff Sherwood

    Dustin Poirier is 8-2 in the UFC. | Photo: Dave Mandel/Sherdog.com

    Dustin Poirier has made his desires known. He hopes to test Conor McGregor in the not-too-distant future.

    McGregor improved to 3-0 in the Ultimate Fighting Championship on Saturday, as he put away Diego Brandao with first-round punches in the UFC Fight Night “McGregor vs. Brandao” main event at The O2 in Dublin. The 26-year-old Irishman has ruffled many a feather with his bravado but has thus far backed up his talk through his efforts in the cage.

    Poirier, 25, owns victories over Brandao, Roufusport’s Erik Koch and “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 12 winner Jonathan Brookins. A dynamic offensive martial artist who invites firefights, the American Top Team featherweight sports 13 finishes among his 16 career victories. Poirier has lost to only two men at 145 pounds: Chan Sung Jung and Cub Swanson.

    UFC Fight Night “McGregor vs. Brandao” spawned a number of intriguing threads on the Sherdog.net forums:

    * DIAMOND CUTTER

    * NO CHEAP SHOT

    * FLY ZONE

    * HAMMER TIME

    * IRISH STING

  • Josh Tucker Joins Press Row By: Jordan Breen

    Every Wednesday, Administrative Editor Jordan Breen welcomes a member of the mixed martial arts media into “Press Row” on the Sherdog.com blog. This week, Breen is joined by Deadspin contributor Josh Tucker.

    With the UFC serving up a pair of cards this week from Atlantic City, N.J., as well as Dublin, Breen and Tucker shed light on why the twin bills are a difficult sign of the times for the world's biggest MMA promotion, the gap in card quality despite Dublin selling out in just three minutes and why Donald Cerrone-Jim Miller is a great example of a current UFC main event despite nearly no publicity. The two discuss why the UFC's cookie cutter approach to promoting individual fights has become completely inadequate with so much MMA on the agenda and why honesty might be the best policy for pre-fight hype in 2014.

    Breen and Tucker also wax poetic on the company's inability to make sports fans care about its expanding product, how the UFC's aversion to criticism makes it hard for mainstream media outlets to cover MMA in a way that connects with its viewers, the simple and often crucial role the animated .gif plays in creating viral sports moments and why the UFC surreptitiously finances provocative, thoughtful MMA commentary and hides it from its core audience.
