Two-time Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight titleholder Georges St. Pierre will celebrate his 33rd birthday on May 19.

“Rush” last fought at UFC 167 in November, when he retained the 170-pound championship with a contentious split decision over Johny Hendricks at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Afterward, the Tristar Gym representative took an indefinite leave of absence and vacated the welterweight crown. St. Pierre has since undergone reconstructive knee surgery -- the second such procedure of his career -- to repair a torn ACL. Wins over Matt Hughes (twice), B.J. Penn (twice), Josh Koscheck (twice), Jon Fitch, Carlos Condit and Nick Diaz highlight his stellar resume, and his 19 victories inside the Octagon rank first on the all-time list.

St. Pierre has also dabbled in acting, having appeared in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.” It was recently announced that he will star in an upcoming remake of the 1989 cult hit “Kickboxer,” which featured Jean-Claude Van Damme.

Georges St. Pierre did not mince words. | Photo: Dave Mandel/Sherdog.com

Georges St. Pierre may not be an active participant on the current mixed martial arts landscape, but his decision to take an indefinite leave of absence from the Ultimate Fighting Championship has not kept the former welterweight titleholder from speaking his mind.

In a March 7 interview with Dallasnews.com, St. Pierre took aim at the controversial subject of testosterone replacement therapy.

“It should have been done a long time ago,” he said. “There’s not another sports that accepts it. It’s a joke. For our sport, I don’t want to accuse individuals. Never once have I accused a person. I don’t want to accuse the organization. The problem is the system. One of the reasons why I stopped [fighting] is I see a lot of [expletive] going on and I got tired of it. I tried to make things change and it didn’t work.”

The Nevada Athletic Commission banned TRT in a unanimous vote on Feb. 27, and a number of other governing bodies have since followed suit.

  • Tyron Woodley Expects Georges St. Pierre to Fight Again By: Sherdog.com Staff

Tyron Woodley, on “Beatdown,” discussing whether it bothers him that he may never get to fight Georges St. Pierre:

“It definitely bothers me and it bothers me for the exact reason you say. It’s not a question -- he’s the best welterweight that’s ever fought in mixed martial arts. He’s the reigning champion. He went through two different generations of fighters. … I think for him, he has nothing to prove to anybody. He did what he needed to do as a champion. It sucks that I would never get to fight him if he doesn’t come back because you can’t really say that you’re the best when you watch a guy like that reign over the division for so long and then you never get to measure yourself against him. … I never thought GSP was unbeatable. Actually, in my opinion, Johny Hendricks is a tougher matchup for me than GSP is style-wise. I think that to me, he was never an invincible foe and I never thought of him as being unbeatable. It’s kind of a bummer not to get the chance to fight him, but I think he’ll come back. I don’t know. My gut’s telling me that he’ll miss it and want to come back.”

  • Firas Zahabi: With Georges St. Pierre on Leave, Door Open for Rory MacDonald By: Sherdog.com Staff

Trainer Firas Zahabi, on “Beatdown,” discussing Rory MacDonald’s view on the welterweight division and Georges St. Pierre’s hiatus:

“The door’s open now, and that’s a motivator for sure. I think what relieves Rory more are all the questions [that have stopped]. Are you going to fight Georges? I think he was getting enough of it. He was adamant about saying no. He didn’t want to fight Georges. Georges didn’t want to fight Rory. I didn’t want them to fight, but it seemed like the whole world wouldn’t stop asking until we gave them the yes answer. I think all three of us are glad that those questions are done and I think there’s a new motivation now for Rory and myself and Georges. We’re turning a new chapter in our lives and who knows what’s going to happen? It’s exciting.”
