Top 5 Stories of the Week
By: Brian Knapp
Strikeforce champion Luke Rockhold bowed out of a title defense. | Credit: Esther Lin/Showtime
Injuries to former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir, 2004 Olympic silver medalist Sara McMann and reigning middleweight titleholder Luke Rockhold forced Strikeforce to cancel its second consecutive event, scheduled for Nov. 3 in Oklahoma City.
The move leaves the promotion in limbo, closed for business for the remainder of 2012. Zuffa officials announced plans for a Strikeforce return in January. By then, five months will have passed between events. The promotion’s Sept. 29 show was scratched on just one week’s notice following lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez’s withdrawal from his headlining title defense against Pat Healy.
Other stories of interest this week include the suspension of Jake Shields following a positive test for a banned substance, Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix winner Daniel Cormier floating the idea of coaching opposite Jon Jones on “The Ultimate Fighter,” the retirement of three-time All-American wrestler Shane Roller and the continuing legal troubles of UFC lightweight Jeremy Stephens.
Closed Until 2013

Jake Shields Would Love a Rematch with Carlos Condit
By: Sherdog.com Staff
Jake Shields, on “Beatdown,” reflecting on his April 2006 win over Carlos Condit and his desire to fight him again:
“At the time I did think we were going to be top guys. Maybe a little sooner than it happened, but Condit’s a great fighter. I think he’s improved a lot, as have I. That’s someone I’d love to get another shot at. Obviously the fight with Nick [Diaz], a lot of people, me included, thought Nick won that fight. I thought running away for five rounds was kind of not a way to win a fight, but I still think Condit’s a good fighter. I hope I get another shot at him. I want to get through Akiyama [first]. I feel like 170 is really up for grabs right now with [Jon] Fitch getting upset and all the shakeups that have been happening. Hopefully I can get in there and get another shot at the title soon.”

In the wake of UFC 144 in Saitama, Japan, Breen and Mindenhall discuss the outcome of Frankie Edgar-Benson Henderson and the MMA-wide discussions about scoring that the bout has instigated. The two discuss whether or not the climate of MMA regulation and judging has improved in recent years, and whether or not there are fundamental philosophical differences about fighting and judging that the sport can never reconcile.
Breen and Mindenhall also rap on video replay, open scoring, advice for Nevada Athletic Commission boss Keith Kizer and more.

Jake Shields Hopes, Believes Nick Diaz Will Fight Again
By: Sherdog.com Staff
Jake Shields, on “Beatdown,” discussing whether he thinks teammate Nick Diaz will fight again:
“It’s really hard to say. Nick’s one of my favorite fighters to watch. I’m friends with him, but I’m still a huge Nick Diaz fan. I really hope he comes back. Even though I know him really well, it’s hard to say. It’s unpredictable if he wants to fight or not. I feel like he’ll be back. I just think he needs a break. I think he’s been fighting so much and he’s so sick of all the media always in his face, getting told he has to do interviews and getting told what he has to do. Nick’s the kind of guy who likes to [live] under his own terms obviously. He likes to come in, train and go fight. I think with all the fame and the pressure and getting told what to do just burnt him out, not to mention he’s been pretty active lately with Strikeforce and UFC. I feel like he just needs a break. I think now that he’s not fighting will actually be good for him. He’s still going to be coming and training with us. I think that’s going to make him start loving the sport again and I think when his [expected suspension] is up, I think he’ll probably have that desire again.”

Jackson Explains Shields’ Eye Poke
By: Sherdog.com Staff
Greg Jackson (Pictured), on “Beatdown,” discussing how Jake Shields poked Georges St. Pierre in the eye:

“Especially when you’re fighting somebody that’s bigger than you and they’re really launching a lot of power shots at you, it’s important to put something in the way. You can’t always just put your hand against your head like you do in boxing because the force isn’t dispersed in an [MMA] glove. A lot of times when you’re dealing with stronger people, you have to put your hands in the way and your arms in the way of their big shots and parry their big shots so they don’t get clean shots on you. Because one shot could end your night or your day. With your hands open like that it is much more of trying to anticipate the parry when punches come. I think what happened was Jake just didn’t think and he threw a jab, but his hand was still open. I don’t think Jake did it on purpose. I know him pretty well, and he’s a good guy.” -

“Winning the belt period, whoever I win it from, would mean a tremendous amount to me, but I think taking it from GSP is a whole different level. He’s possibly the best champ of all time. That’s a completely different level in my mind.”
