  • SDS: McCall & Hieron By: TJ De Santis

Greg Savage and Jeff Sherwood returned to The Sherdog Radio Network Monday for another edition of "The Savage Dog Show." Joining them were MMA fighters Ian McCall and Jay Hieron.

Ian McCall looked stellar Friday night in Lemoore, California at The Tachi Palace. "Uncle Creepy" joined the show Monday to talk about his unanimous decision victory of Tennessee's Dustin Ortiz.

Saturday night Jay Hieron defeated Rick Hawn in the finals of Bellator's welterweight tournament. Though the fan's opinion of the bout vary as to who won the fight, Hieron claims to be surprised at the decision going his way was split. The Xtreme Couture product talks about the victory and his upcoming title shot with Ben Askren.

  • Hieron: I’m Top 10 By: Sherdog.com Staff

Jay Hieron, on “The Savage Dog Show,” discussing how he compares to other welterweights:

“There’s great fighters out there, but me personally, I feel I’m just as good or better than anybody out there. That’s just my mind frame. That’s how I train. I believe in myself. I put in the work just as much as everybody else. I hope the opponent that I fight feels the same as I do so it can be a great fight. I feel I’m top 10 in the world. I haven’t lost since I won my world title. I’m just ready to perform.”

  • Strikeforce Post-Mortem: Punches in Bunches, Football’s Revenge, and More By: Jake Rossen

Nick Diaz is not a knockout artist in any traditional sense: you don’t need to fear a lunch box of a hand crashing into your temple. What Diaz does instead is arguably more impressive: instead of connecting once, he transmits force over and over and over again -- 95 times in the first round alone against Marius Zaromskis on Saturday. If the first ten don’t wear on you, the next 85 will.

Diaz’ evolution from a pestering striker with a black belt reserve to a genuinely threatening combination artist has been fascinating to watch. Western boxing has had a tradition of being the most criminally under-represented element in MMA. Part of the blame lies in the ineffectual nature of a boxing stance -- feet planted -- which will get you kicked or swept into a coffin; part of it is just the handyman nature of the sport and the limited time afforded to any one element.

Diaz is by no means a striker who can step into a boxing ring, a suggestion made -- hopefully in jest -- by commentator Mauro Ranallo last night. By boxing’s standards, he is eccentric at best. But in a sport where bad boxing is the only kind being practiced, eccentric is enough.

  • Carano Takes Home $125,000 By: Jake Rossen

The value of being a poster girl: Gina Carano, who suffered her first professional loss Saturday at the piston-pumping hands of Cristiane Santos, earned $125,000 for the effort according to numbers released by the California State Athletic Commission. Santos earned only a fraction of that, having to settle for only $25,000 and Carano’s still-beating heart.

Officially, the second-highest take-home salary on the card was Renato "Babalu" Sobral, who banked $75,000 for his efforts. Unofficially, the undisclosed salary of Gegard Mousasi was probably good for six figures, or something close to it.

Mousasi wasn’t good for a lot of mass media attention -- though that could change if he keeps beating people to the extent a coroner rushes into the ring instead of an EMT -- but Carano might be one of the best buys in the sport. For that weekend, at least.

  • Strikeforce Primer: Carano vs. Cyborg By: Jake Rossen

You may find a number of reasons to dislike women’s fighting -- suspect cardiovascular conditioning, lack of KO power, potential emasculation in knowing any of them would whip your Cheetos-cushioned ass -- but there are few excuses not to be excited at Saturday’s promise of an undisputed female champion.

Joined at the hip since 2007, 145 lb. contenders Gina Carano and Cristiane Santos will finally resolve their status and determine who holds claim to being the toughest lactating human on the planet. You can be reasonably sure Andy Kaufman is very, very glad he never lived to encounter either one.

  • Notes from Strikeforce Presser: Hieron’s Lost Title Shot; Mousasi Wants the World By: Loretta Hunt

Plans have changed for Jay Hieron. Photo by Terry Goodlad/Sherdog.com.

Jay Hieron set his sights on gold, which is why the former IFL welterweight champion said he chose a three-fight deal with Strikeforce over leading competitor, the UFC.

“The UFC, nothing bad to say about them, they offered me a great deal, but definitely, I can’t turn down a title shot right now,” said Hieron during a Strikeforce conference call Monday. “That’s what I’m looking forward to. That’s what I want to be, is a world champion.”

Plans have since changed. Hieron’s opponent, Nick Diaz, was replaced Monday afternoon by “Ultimate Fighter” alumnus Jesse Taylor after Diaz skipped out on the necessary pre-fight drug testing. Hieron-Taylor will be a non-title bout. During the call held before the announcement, Hieron, who was picked up after Affliction’s Aug. 1 event fell through, seemed at least aware that his bout with Diaz was on the ropes.

  • Hieron/Diaz Added, Toughill and Thomson Dropped from 8/15 Strikeforce Card By: Jake Rossen

According to Fanhouse, a welterweight title bout of excessive randomness between Nick Diaz and Jay Hieron has been added to Strikeforce’s August 15 card in San Jose, California.

Diaz was originally slated to fight Joe Riggs; Riggs pulled out citing an allergic reaction to medication. Hieron, you may recall, was part of the Hindenburg “Affliction: Trilogy” card that was TKOed last week via massive ineptitude. The Xtreme Couture fighter hasn’t lost in two years.

The card will have to make do with one less title bout, as Josh Thomson’s defense against Gilbert Melendez has been postponed -- for the second time -- due to injury. Melendez will face Mitsuhiro Ishida instead, in what should be a compelling sequel to their 2007 bout.

Fanhouse also reports that female combatant Erin Toughill, once believed to be competing on the same card, will instead be used as a break-glass emergency replacement in the event Gina Carano or Cristiane Santos suffer an injury. Being employed as a precautionary measure in this economy? Not too bad.
