  • Firas Zahabi Doesn’t Think Johny Hendricks Can Hold Robbie Lawler Down By: Sherdog.com Staff

Trainer Firas Zahabi, on “Beatdown,” discussing the UFC 171 welterweight title fight between Johny Hendricks and Robbie Lawler:

“I think it’s a 50-50 fight. I really believe it’s a 50-50 fight. I’m not able to see their preparation; if I could see their preparation, then I’d have more of an idea because it all depends on their preparation. Their preparation, it’s a big part of the result that night. I wouldn’t count Robbie Lawler out, no way. He hits really hard. There’s no real easy way to hold him down. Even if Hendricks were to take him down … if it’s not working out and he does take Lawler down, I don’t think he’ll really hold Lawler down, not for five rounds. Lawler will get back up. Lawler will be active off his back. Lawler’s jiu-jitsu has improved leaps and bounds. Hendricks can win, obviously. I just think anybody who counts Robbie Lawler out is crazy. It’s 50-50.”

  • Podcast: ‘Rampage’ Jackson, Steven Wright By: Sherdog.com Staff

TJ De Santis and Jeff Sherwood returned to the Sherdog Radio Network Wednesday for another edition of "Beatdown." Joining them was former UFC light-heavyweight champion Quinton Jackson and Johny Hendricks' striking coach Steven Wright.

Last Friday night "Rampage" punched his ticket to the finals of Bellator's season 10 light-heavyweight tournament. Jackson joined "Beatdown" to discuss latest victory over Christian M'Pumbu, the events that transpired inside the cage after the stoppage, and his rivalry with fellow tournament finalist "King" Muhammed Lawal.

Steven Wright returns to the SRN to discuss Johny Hendricks' upcoming UFC 171 main event title scrap against Robbie Lawler. Wright breaks down the style matchup, the welterweight division, and if Lawler poses more of a threat because he is a southpaw.

TJ and Jeff also take listener calls, emails, and tweets. The guys also discuss rumors of Gina Carano returning to face Ronda Rousey

  • Johny Hendricks: I Wasn’t Coasting in 5th Round Against Georges St. Pierre By: Sherdog.com Staff

Johny Hendricks, on “Beatdown,” discussing whether he was coasting in the fifth round of his title bout against Georges St. Pierre:

“No. … I checked a kick of his, and whenever I checked a kick of his, it popped my knee. Whenever I was getting up in the fifth round, I felt it give out and so I was … smiling because one, I thought I clearly had it won. Two, I was like, How am I going to push through something like this? Because whenever I stood up, it felt like it gave out. I didn’t want to put too much pressure on it because if you throw and your knee does give out on you and you fall to the ground, well, Georges is going to see that, and he might take advantage of that.”

  • Podcast: Johny Hendricks, Tarec Saffiedine By: Sherdog.com Staff

TJ De Santis and Jeff Sherwood returned to the Sherdog Radio Network Wednesday for another edition of “Beatdown.” On today’s show they welcomed in UFC welterweights Tarec Saffiedine and Johny Hendricks.

It’s been a crazy month for Team Takedown product Hendricks. The Texas based welterweight went from losing a controversial decision to Georges St. Pierre to preparing for a second chance at UFC welterweight gold as he faces Robbie Lawler in March at UFC 171. The two welterweights will vie for the title after GSP vacated the crown to embark on an indefinite hiatus. Hendricks joined De Santis and Sherwood to chat about Lawler, St. Pierre’s decision to leave MMA and what it will be like to fight in his hometown for the first time. The former OSU Cowboy also shares his thoughts on if GSP will ever return to the UFC’s Octagon

Saffiedine wrote his name in the history books forever in his last fight when he defeated Nate Marquardt to become the final Strikeforce welterweight champion. Since then the Team Quest product has been forced to endure nearly a year long layoff due to injuries. Now, just weeks away from his UFC debut, “The Sponge” joined De Santis and Sherwood to talk about his main event fight with Hyun Gyu Lim and what it’s like to finally compete as a UFC fighter. The Belgian also chats about what it will be like to fight on the first UFC card in Singapore.

  • Steven Wright: Eventually Johny Hendricks Could Move to 185 By: Sherdog.com Staff

Team Takedown striking coach Steven Wright, on “Beatdown,” discussing Johny Hendricks’ future:

“We’re excited about the opportunity to be the [welterweight] champion and then hold the title, and then of course if you talk to Johny, we want to do it for a little bit and then he wants to go up to 185 so he can be even bigger in the offseason. … We’re talking about him being 33, 34 years old, so by the time he tried the 185 thing down the road, he’d be going towards the end of his career. I’m not saying he could campaign there for years and years and years, because those guys are pretty tall. … Johny could hit those guys, but he’d have to get inside on them. He’d have to work his takedowns a lot more later in his career if he wants to campaign at 185, but he’s just that kind of guy.”
