Dann Stupp Joins Press Row
By: Jordan Breen
Every Wednesday, Administrative Editor Jordan Breen welcomes a member of the mixed martial arts media into “Press Row” on the Sherdog.com blog. This week, Breen is joined by MMA Junkie editor-in-chief and USA Today senior MMA editor Dann Stupp.
With June drawing to a close, Breen and Stupp discuss the half-year-in-review through six months of 2013, examining the biggest stories and themes on the year thus far, from testosterone replacement therapy and Fallon Fox to spinning hook kicks and fighter pay. The two look at how the dominant themes in MMA this year differ from years past, what they say about the evolution of the sport and how they have moved the needle with mainstream audiences.
Breen and Stupp also review the year's superlatives so far, weighing in on their favorite knockouts, submissions and upsets of 2013, as well as who deserves to be the “Fighter of the Half Year.”

Josh Burkman: Criticism of Steve Mazzagatti ‘Harsh,’ But He Was Out of Position
By: Sherdog.com Staff
Josh Burkman, on “Beatdown,” discussing Dana White’s criticism of referee Steve Mazzagatti for not stopping Burkman’s fight against Jon Fitch:
“I think Dana White’s justified. I didn’t really realize it until I just watched the video again, and Mazzagatti’s very out of place. He’s standing straight up, and that choke was pretty deep. I think Mazzagatti’s getting a little bit of harsh criticism because he was out of place, but at the same time I understand why he’s getting it because what if there was a feud there with me and Fitch? What if I really did want to hurt him or vice versa? A referee should definitely be in better places for those things, but the criticism from what I’m hearing is a little harsh. I remember Fitch was fighting, fighting and he went out pretty quick and I let go of the choke. I believe it’s a little bit harsh, but again, Mazzagatti should have been in better position considering a fighter was in that choke.”

Away from MMA, Josh Burkman Rediscovered Love for the Sport
By: Sherdog.com Staff
Josh Burkman, on “Beatdown,” discussing the changes he’s made:
“When I got injured, I had fighting taken away from me. I had it taken away from me for a little bit over a year. I couldn’t go in a fight gym -- I couldn’t do none of it, and then I realized how much I loved what I did. Over that year I changed my lifestyle so much. I changed my diet and the way that I went about training. When I was able to get back into the fight gym, I just got this renewed passion for learning. I think that’s what keeps me so motivated is learning. There’s always something new to learn, whether it’s jiu-jitsu or wrestling or boxing. There’s always a new trick. I think when you’re learning, you’re having fun and then that makes me work harder. The harder that I work, the more that I like what I’m doing.”

Weekend Rundown: Iceland’s Nelson Wins Eighth Straight
By: Brian Knapp
Sherdog.com Illustration
Undefeated Icelandic prospect Gunnar Nelson posted his eighth consecutive victory in a featured matchup at British Association of Mixed Martial Arts 4 on Saturday, as he submitted Eugene Fadiora with a first-round rear-naked choke at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham, England. Fadiora, who entered the match unblemished in nine previous bouts, met his demise 3:51 into round one.
Nelson, a can’t-miss up-and-comer in the welterweight division by most accounts, took down Fadiora, passed to side mount and weakened him with hammerfists before securing the fight-ending choke. A Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt under Renzo Gracie, the 22-year-old Reykjavik, Iceland, native finished fourth in the absolute division at the 2009 Abu Dhabi Combat Club Submission Wrestling World Championships. Nelson has stopped his last three foes inside one round.
Meanwhile, BAMMA middleweight champion Tom Watson retained his crown with a unanimous decision over Alex Reid in the main event. Watson has delivered eight wins in his past nine appearances, losing only to UFC veteran Jesse Taylor. Read more
