  • Podcast: Ivan Menjivar, Mike Richman By: Sherdog.com Staff

TJ De Santis and Jeff Sherwood were back for another three hour edition of “Beatdown.” Joining them was UFC bantamweight Ivan Menjivar and Bellator featherweight semi-finalist Mike Richman.

Menjivar has spent his mixed martial arts career competing at multiple weight divisions. “The Pride of El Salvador” joined TJ and Jeff to talk about his UFC 157 rematch with Urijah Faber. This time at 135 pounds, Menjivar talks about how he has changed since their 2006 meeting and if he feels the first clash helped him at all in preparing for the rematch. Ivan also shares his thoughts on weight classes in MMA and why he feels the sport needs to seriously consider same day weigh-ins.

Richman is celebrating another knockout win inside the Bellator cage. “The Marine” chats about his victory over fellow Minnesotan Mitch Jackson last Thursday night in Duluth, Ga. Richman also breaks down his standup fighting technique, why he has been successful in his MMA campaign and how he feels he will match up against Alexandre Bezerra in the semifinals of this season’s featherweight tournament.

Along with these interviews TJ and Jeff take listener calls, emails, and tweets. The guys also ponder if the UFC should strip Dominick Cruz of his bantamweight title in today’s radio poll. Listen to “Beatdown” here.

  • Mike ‘The Marine’ Richman Explains Different Mentalities for Combat & Fighting By: Sherdog.com Staff

Mike Richman, on “Beatdown,” discussing how his training as a Marine helps him as a fighter:

“It just makes me a harder fighter, a tougher fighter in the discipline and the training aspects of things. People always [say], ‘You should have the mental edge, man. You should be a killer. You’ve been in combat. You should just be a killing machine.’ Which I don’t think is true. It’s kind of a different feeling, being in a combat environment. The chemicals that go through your brain, the fight-or-flight mentality, it’s completely different than when I’m walking in the cage. It’s like I know I’m competing in a competition. I look at it as a football player lacing up his shoes, getting ready to go out there and play. I kind of look at it as a different state. I don’t think it really helps me in that aspect, but it definitely helps me in my training and my toughness, if that makes sense. I know I’m not going to die. I know I’m not going to go into the cage and I know I’m not going to die. It’s a different feeling that your body goes through.”
