More from Mike Swick's appearance on Monday's Beatdown radio program.
On how he's approaching Saturday’s fight: “We've never seen him be stopped. I assume he's got a really good chin. I've seen him take some good punches including some really hard overhands from my teammate Koscheck, who hits really hard with that right hand. We assume he's got a really tough chin. I assume he's going to be tough to submit. He's a jiu-jitsu black belt, a multiple-time champ. So I assume he's overall a very tough and hard-to-finish guy.”
“Paulo Thiago's an exciting fight to prepare for. This is my first jiu-jitsu black belt to prepare for in the UFC. It poses a lot of different elements for the fight. I feel challenged in different ways than previous opponents. I'm super excited to get out there and mix it up with Paulo.” Read more -

5 Questions: UFC 105
By: Jake Rossen
D. Mandel/Sherdog.com
Is weight loss healthy for Couture?
During a recent four-fight heavyweight run, Randy Couture was outweighed by as much as 50 pounds on fight night. While it might seem wise to eliminate that excess and return to the light heavyweight arena, there’s always a price to be paid: in this case, he’ll be facing some considerably faster opponents who might be able to put punches together in the same time Tim Sylvia got off one.
Will Vera be intimidated by the Couture name?
Brandon Vera has made repeated mention of athletes like Chuck Liddell and Couture being role models for what can be accomplished in the sport; that kind of hero worship cost Georges St. Pierre his first fight against Matt Hughes. While Couture isn’t running as rampant as Hughes was at the time, he may still exist in Vera’s head as something other than a man. An idol is a hard thing to damage. Read more -

We know the story, and we know how it often ends: Randy Couture, who has somehow avoided the debilitating effects of 12 years spent inside the Octagon, takes on a younger, faster, hungrier opponent. People with microphones and laptops gather around and shake their heads at the waiting disaster. And then Couture makes us all -- observers, fighters, bookies -- eat a big, fat one.
This pattern has been repeated against Chuck Liddell, Vitor Belfort (twice), Tim Sylvia, Pedro Rizzo (twice), Gabriel Gonzaga, Kevin Randleman, and Tito Ortiz -- and to a lesser extent, in respectable efforts against Antonio Nogueira and Brock Lesnar. It is not Couture’s viability at his age that impresses, but his ability to resist the cumulative wear of spending over a decade in a sport that treats participants like a wood chipper welcomes trees. It’s an inexplicable career we should probably be grateful for witnessing first-hand. Read more -
AKA vs. Matt Hughes
By: Greg Savage
Dave Mandel/Sherdog.com
Recent comments by American Kickboxing Academy welterweights Mike Swick, Jon Fitch and Josh Koscheck about former UFC champion Matt Hughes and their desire to fight him have been misconstrued, say Swick and Fitch.
Both fighters said they would welcome a fight with the man who ruled their division and garnered praise by many pundits as the “most dominant champion in UFC history,” but also made it clear they respect Hughes and his accomplishments in the sport.
“After I backed out of the Kampmann fight I needed and opponent, he needed an opponent. He is one of the greatest credentialed fighters in UFC history and I was like, ‘Let’s do it.’ It would be an honor to fight him,” said Swick, who will fight Dan Hardy for a crack at Georges St. Pierre’s welterweight title at UFC 105 in November. “That’s when I made it known publicly that I wanted to fight him and I was told that wasn’t going to happen. Then Koscheck won his fight and he called him out, and I guess it seems like we are all calling him out but he’s available and we all want to get a good fight.”
His teammate echoed his sentiments.
“We’ve been asking for that fight for a long time, and it’s just never materialized. I can’t say on whose end or why, but it is something that we all just wanted so we just keep asking,” said Fitch. “He’s still in the running, he hasn’t lost that much. It’s a good fight, a good fight to have.”
Fitch will have his hands full with jiu-jitsu ace Ricardo Almeida at UFC 106 in November, which leaves Koscheck as the only member of the triumvirate without an opponent at this time.
Hughes vs. Koscheck in 2010? We’ll have to wait and see. Read more
