  • Phan Discusses Punching to the Body in MMA By: Sherdog.com Staff

Nam Phan, on “The Savage Dog Show,” discussing the use of body punches in MMA:

“I think guys don’t use it as much because it’s a very technical punch. It takes a while to get good at. I think people think that when you throw the punch, when you throw a body shot, you leave your head open. It takes a lot of practice. If you use it well, it’s very effective. … It’s very flattering that I’m known for the body shots, but I don’t try to knock guys out with a body shot. … I take what I can get. If the body’s there, I’ll take the body. If the head shot’s there, I’ll take the head. If the leg’s there, I’ll kick the leg. If the submission’s there, I’ll take the submission. I just think guys maybe need to be more open-minded to strikes. That’s all. Or just put more time into it.”

Nam Phan, on “The Savage Dog Show,” taking back his criticism of Leonard Garcia ahead of their rematch at UFC 136:

“I might have said some things kind of out of place. I might have said some things against Leonard, but I shouldn’t have. It’s not Leonard’s fault. All he does is fight. Who I should be pissed about are the judges for being so blind.”

  • Kizer under Fire By: Jake Rossen

Keith Kizer: Dave Mandel | Sherdog.com

The on-air rant directed at Nevada State Athletic Commission Executive Director Keith Kizer by UFC broadcaster Joe Rogan Saturday could only come as a result of pent-up frustration at how administrators can fail to address the unique needs of the sport. Seeing someone like Nam Phan go through the painful monotony of training, dieting and competing, only to be victimized by poor judging, is a killer.

Predictably, Kizer wasn’t interested in a head-on collision with Rogan, preferring to make half-hearted assurances that he would try to address the problem. “We, as a sport, need to keep improving,” he said.

Rogan airing those grievances on a broadcast is being celebrated by most and questioned by a few -- a subjective “attack” on a state official from someone ostensibly meant to be objective is in poor taste, some have argued. But there’s hardly been a shortage of broadcasters being openly critical of content: Larry Merchant has spent years lighting up the ridiculous matchmaking in boxing even as he was forced to call it; Joe Buck once railed on Randy Moss, who had crassly wagged his butt at a Packers crowd; even Jim Ross has been forced to second-guess the actions of Ric Flair on occasion.

These people are not drones, and the ability to voice concern in a manner that will reach people is often too tempting to ignore.

  • UFC/Strikeforce Postmortem: Judge Dread, Knockouts By: Jake Rossen

    Leonard Garcia file photo: Sherdog.com

Among Mike Goldberg’s usual duties -- sponsor plugs, broadcast generalship, tanning -- is reciting the standard “Rules of the Octagon” narration over a graphic, which states points will be awarded “based on striking, grappling, aggression, and Octagon control.” At 10 seconds in length, this will never be mistaken for an instructional video, but it’s become very obvious that Nevada judges in attendance Saturday haven’t even bothered with that much.

After handling Leonard Garcia for three rounds, pushing Garcia backward, landing while Garcia whiffed in open-mouthed “offense” and even taking a round with a conceivable 10-8 work effort, two judges ignored Nam Phan and scored the bout 29-28 Garcia. (The third saw it 30-27 Phan, cementing his status as human with two functioning corneas.) It stands next to New Coke, “The Phantom Menace” and the Hula burger as one of the worst decisions of all time.

In typically boorish bureaucratic fashion, these judges will never be asked to explain their scorecard, will never be asked to provide evidence of their competency, and will probably not be reprimanded in any meaningfully way -- all expected outcomes of virtually every other botched job on the planet.

Nothing can suffocate the enthusiasm of fans more quickly than something purported to be “As Real as it Gets” burdened by the inexplicable presence of officials who use a fictitious set of standards to oversee fights. Athletic commissions are assumed to be competent; as we saw with Chael Sonnen’s hearing Thursday, some members can’t even tell the difference between a mixed martial artist and a boxer. At this point, it’s becoming impossible to tell the difference between a fight judge and a brick.
