  • Marquardt: Judges Should Score More 10-8, 10-10 Rounds By: Sherdog.com Staff

Nate Marquardt (Pictured), on “Beatdown,” discussing the 10-point must system:

“I think the [10-point must] system is good, but I honestly feel like most judges don’t really utilize the full system. They score every round either 10 or a 9 for either opponent. They’re rarely using 10-8 rounds where you see a guy gets knocked down once or twice. I feel like if there’s a dominant round where the guy’s getting knocked down, that should be a 10-8 round. That’s how it is in boxing. If you knock the guy down and nothing else happens, that’s a 10-8 round. I also feel like 10-10 rounds should be utilized. I think sometimes the round is a draw.”

  • Marquardt: Steroids Not the Reason Sonnen Beat Me By: Sherdog.com Staff

Nate Marquardt, on “Beatdown,” discussing Chael Sonnen’s alleged positive steroid test after fighting Anderson Silva and whether steroids played a role in his fight against Sonnen:

“First of all, that’s not the reason he beat me. He beat me fair and square, and I feel like I know the reason he beat me. It’s because I didn’t follow my game plan. But frankly … I should be able to beat anyone in the world. It doesn’t matter if they’re on steroids. When you’re a true athlete, I think the best result from your training is to be natural and just to be healthy. I think using steroids, for a true athlete, is going to take away from your performance in one sense or another. You might get stronger, but you might get slower. You might get faster, but you’re going to get tired quicker or it’s going to shorten your career. I think there’s a lot of different [reasons] that are bad for an athlete to use steroids. Like I said, it doesn’t matter to me. I should have won anyway.”

  • UFC 122 Postmortem: Okami Wins, Marquardt Frozen By: Jake Rossen

Yushin Okami: Jeff Sherwood | Sherdog.com

For his efforts against the dangerous Nate Marquardt Saturday at UFC 122 in Germany, Yushin Okami may have earned himself a nice, warm spot on a bench; the No.1 ranked middleweight -- at least for as long as Chael Sonnen tries to restore his name amid steroid allegations -- in the UFC has been promised a title shot against Anderson Silva. But when and how that happens wasn’t part of the guarantee.

Silva fights Vitor Belfort in February; if he and Georges St. Pierre both win their respective bouts (St. Pierre fights in December), there’s absolutely no better time to make that pound-for-pound fight happen. If fans get what they want, Okami might be a year away from contention.

Does he continue to fight, as Chuck Liddell did when Tito Ortiz ran around in circles years ago? Or does he take a cue from Rashad Evans and find a comfortable chair until he’s delivered what’s been promised? A title shot and especially a title win can be a lucrative achievement. But “inactive fighter” is an oxymoron. If you’re fit to fight, go fight.

  • Red Ink: Marquardt vs. Okami By: Jake Rossen

Nate Marquardt: Dave Mandel | Sherdog.com

In a sport where the violence can often ruin game plans and composure, Nate Marquardt is one of the most impressively disciplined fighters in competition. There’s no wild haymaking, no foolish offense, and no panic. He’d make a good poster guy for transcendental meditation.

Marquardt’s problem Saturday is that Yushin Okami has a similar attitude; both men are likely to settle into a middle-gear fight with a deliberate pace. Okami can outwrestle Marquardt, but you’d expect Marquardt learned a thing or two from his loss to Chael Sonnen. Conversely, it’s going to be hard to put Okami in bad positions. This is a necessary fight, but it’s impossible to believe either guy is looking forward to it.

What It Means: For both, a chance for a place in the Anderson Silva queue.

Wild Card: Marquardt stepped in for Vitor Belfort only two months removed from his last fight. Is eight weeks enough time to recover, train, and peak for his toughest UFC bout to date?

Who Wins: Marquardt is going to have a very difficult time pushing his normal pace against Okami, who can slow things down to his liking. That said, Marquardt’s hands are just a bit sharper and his ground game a bit savvier. Marquardt in an ugly split decision.

  • Primer: UFC 122/WEC 52 By: Jake Rossen

Watching a television program that’s already been cancelled can be a depressing experience. What happens to the talent -- in this case, WEC play-by-play man Todd Harris? Will the ring girl not named Brittany Palmer ever find a job as satisfying? What happens to the gaffer? (The UFC, no matter how large it grows, will never need two gaffers. In fact, I question the need for one.)

Sympathy for the working man might cloud your enjoyment of WEC 52, airing Thursday, but there are a few stories that will see resolution when the company’s roster is ported over to the UFC beginning next month; UFC 122, airing on a tape-delay Saturday, has at least one bout with title implications. Between the two, there are at least ten good fights with a zero cover charge over the next several days. Remember that when you’re asked multiple times to see “Unstoppable.”
