  • Pat Healy on Positive Marijuana Test: It’s a Pretty Unfortunate Rule By: Sherdog.com Staff

Pat Healy, on “Beatdown,” discussing his positive marijuana test after beating Jim Miller and whether athletic commissions should test for marijuana:

“I don’t think you should be under the influence of anything when you go in there [to fight] or certainly not be able to take something that’s going to affect your performance while you’re in there, like if you took steroids prior. But something I did three and a half weeks out, where it had really no effect on the fight whatsoever, I mean it’s a pretty unfortunate rule, I think.”

A positive test for marijuana proved quite costly for Pat Healy.

Mere weeks removed from the most significant victory of his career -- a third-round submission against AMA Fight Club’s Jim Miller at UFC 159 -- Healy saw the result changed to a no contest by the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board. In addition, the 29-year-old received a 90-day suspension and had $130,000 in bonus money rescinded by the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Healy was awarded “Submission of the Night” and “Fight of the Night” honors after he rendered Miller unconscious with a rear-naked choke on April 27. It was his first appearance inside the Octagon in nearly seven years. UFC President Dana White announced that bantamweight Bryan Caraway would receive the UFC 159 submission bonus in light of Healy’s test results.

  • Podcast: Pat Healy, Bryan Caraway, Greg Jackson By: Sherdog.com Staff

TJ De Santis and Jeff Sherwood returned to the Sherdog Radio Network Monday for another edition of “Beatdown.” Joining them were UFC 159 luminaries Pat Healy, Bryan Caraway, and Jon Jones’ coach, Greg Jackson.

The Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., played host to a bizarre night of mixed martial arts action. Healy opened the night on pay-per-view with an upset submission victory over hometown favorite Jim Miller. The former Strikeforce number one contender joined De Santis and Sherwood to talk about his return to the UFC seven years after his Octagon debut. Healy recounts the excitement leading up to the bout, if he felt this was a return or his true debut in the UFC, and what it took to dispatch Miller.

Caraway stepped up to face Johnny Bedford on short notice. “The Ultimate Fighter” alum chats about his decision to take the fight, what it was like facing a friend and former training partner, and what it’s like fighting in the shadow of his girlfriend, fellow UFC fighter Miesha Tate.

Jones was victorious over Chael Sonnen in dominant fashion in the main event of UFC 159. Coach Greg Jackson shares his experience being in the corner of the UFC light heavyweight champion. Jackson discusses the mindset of Jones entering the fight, the game plan, and the grotesque injury to Jones’ foot, which left his toe mangled.

De Santis and Sherwood also took listener calls, emails, and tweets. The guys also take a look at officiating coming out of the UFC 159 event and what can be done to deal with eye injuries more efficiently. Listen to “Beatdown” here

  • What Pat Healy Would Do Differently If He Could Start Over By: Sherdog.com Staff

Pat Healy, on “Beatdown,” discussing the losses on his record and its effect on fans’ perception of him:

“My record’s not the best. I had a lot of fights early in my career that I shouldn’t have took and I took on short notice, but you’ve got to understand, I was poor. Literally poor for five or six years of my life. I don’t think many people can relate to that. They don’t know what that feels like, to not be able to afford to eat good, to be struggling to put food on the table. I don’t think people know what that’s like. I don’t see people relating to that. That’s the reality of my situation. … In a perfect world, I wish I could go back when I was younger and be like, ‘Hey man, this is going to affect you the rest of your life. Maybe you shouldn’t take this fight on two weeks’ notice when you haven’t really been training.’ But I didn’t have any guidance. I just had a dude who, you could call him my manager, I guess, at the time. He would just throw me any fight that came to him. I was always stepping up on short notice. I really love to fight and to be in there, but you see guys nowadays being a lot smarter. They win four or five fights and they’re in a big show or they’ve got great buzz about them. It really pays to do it intelligently.”
