  • Pat Miletich: What Robbie Lawler Did Against Johny Hendricks Won’t Be Repeated By Others By: Sherdog.com Staff

Pat Miletich, on “Rewind,” discussing whether other fighters can follow Robbie Lawler’s game plan against Johny Hendricks:

“By and large, for the most part, nobody has that sheer power and mechanical punching ability that Rob does that they could necessarily hurt Johny Hendricks. Johny’s obviously more than happy to stand in the pocket and bang with anyone because if he can do it with Lawler, he can do it with anyone in the sport. So it’s tough for me to give a game plan that somebody’s going to be able to pull off because most guys are going to get crushed doing that against Hendricks, as everybody would against Lawler, trying to fight that way.”

  • Podcast: Pat Miletich Breaks Down Hendricks-Lawler on 'Rewind' By: Sherdog.com Staff

UFC 171 is in the books and headliners Johny Hendricks and Robbie Lawler put in an effort for the ages to decide a new welterweight champion. Now in a "Pro Perspective" edition of the Sherdog Radio Network "Rewind," the man who trained Lawler and pegged Hendricks for big things two years ago takes a deep dive into what we saw transpire over 25 minutes in Dallas.

Former UFC champion and MMA guru Pat Miletich joins Rewind host Jack Encarnacao for a detailed discussion of the tactics at play in Hendricks v. Lawler, as well as what telltale qualities of Lawler shone through in the bout. Miletich puts his finger on just what makes Johny Hendricks so tough to beat, and how Lawler processes being involved in a war.

  • Pat Miletich Analyzes Which Wrestlers Make Good Strikers By: Sherdog.com Staff

Pat Miletich, on “Beatdown,” discussing which wrestlers become good strikers:

“When I look at wrestlers, I look at the style of wrestler that they are. Their ability to pick up striking, very similarly, will depend on -- most of the time -- on how they wrestled. How quick were they? How fleet-footed were they? If they were a guy that just latched onto people and just kind of tried to grind people out -- which there’s a lot of guys who are great at that and win national championships and Olympic medals doing that style of wrestling -- they’re generally not the kind of guy who’s going to be great at striking. It never works out that way, not very often.

“But the guys who are real fleet-footed, real quick, agile athletes, guys that can scramble, a lot of fast-twitch muscle, guys like Ty Woodley, a guy like Cain Velasquez, a guy like Daniel Cormier, guys like that, they get it. Rob Lawler’s the same way. Jens Pulver was that way. The style of wrestler that they are lends itself to the striking, but also the base of wrestling -- wrestling’s a brutal sport. I have to admit that the daily grind of wrestling, it’s a street fight for two hours in practice every day. It’s just a brutal sport. If you give up for a second in a wrestling match, you’ll get put on your back. You can’t coast when you’re up against tough people, and that’s just their mentality. Between the work ethic, the explosiveness, the balance, the grip, the tendon strength, everything combined, I don’t see how you could not pick that as the best base for an MMA career.”

  • Podcast: Tyron Woodley, Pat Miletich By: Sherdog.com Staff

TJ De Santis and Jeff Sherwood returned to the Sherdog Radio Network on Monday for another edition of “Beatdown.” Joining them on the broadcast was UFC welterweight contender Tyron Woodley and former UFC welterweight champion Pat Miletich.

Former Strikeforce title challenger Woodley is firmly in the mix of the UFC’s 170 pound title picture. He looks to further his chances for a title shot at UFC 171 where he takes on former WEC and UFC interim welterweight champion Carlos Condit. Woodley breaks down the upcoming match, the current UFC welterweight division, and what will happen if his teammate Robbie Lawler should emerge victorious with the UFC welterweight title. Woodley also chats about his participation of the UFC’s press tour raising awareness during Black History Month.

Miletich told the Sherdog Radio Network in August 2012 that Daniel Cormier would “ragdoll” Jon Jones if they ever met. Then, Cormier was still competing in Strikeforce’s heavyweight division. Fast forward 18 months and “DC” is just days removed from his UFC light-heavyweight debut. Miletich joins De Santis and Sherwood to discuss that bold statement and how confident in Cormier he is still capture UFC 205-pound gold.

TJ and Jeff also take listener calls, emails, and tweets. As well as react to the news which sees former Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez sign a new deal with the UFC.
