Primer: UFC Fight Night 22
By: Jake Rossen
Nate Marquardt file photo: Dave Mandel | Sherdog.com
A little nip and tuck here and there and it’s entirely possible the UFC will one day be broadcasting biweekly or weekly fight cards, completing their assimilation of pro wrestling marketing. Shave down those 10- or 11-bout pay-per-views, absorb the WEC and recruit some of the global talent they’re grooming for international expansion, and you’ve got at least 26 weeks of programming.
Until then, you’ll have to settle for Wednesday’s broadcast of UFC Fight Night 22, headlined by Nate Marquardt mixing it up with Rousimar Palhares. Marquardt was last seen suffering a debilitating, contender-nicking loss to Chael Sonnen; Palhares drew some heat for cranking a submission on Tomasz Drwal after a tap. While Palhares has only lost to Dan Henderson in the Octagon, his other opposition has been less than stellar: Marquardt represents a quantum step in competition since Henderson. The story of how Palhares responds to those new demands on his ability is probably the most intriguing of the night.

UFC 105 Primer

We know the story, and we know how it often ends: Randy Couture, who has somehow avoided the debilitating effects of 12 years spent inside the Octagon, takes on a younger, faster, hungrier opponent. People with microphones and laptops gather around and shake their heads at the waiting disaster. And then Couture makes us all -- observers, fighters, bookies -- eat a big, fat one.
This pattern has been repeated against Chuck Liddell, Vitor Belfort (twice), Tim Sylvia, Pedro Rizzo (twice), Gabriel Gonzaga, Kevin Randleman, and Tito Ortiz -- and to a lesser extent, in respectable efforts against Antonio Nogueira and Brock Lesnar. It is not Couture’s viability at his age that impresses, but his ability to resist the cumulative wear of spending over a decade in a sport that treats participants like a wood chipper welcomes trees. It’s an inexplicable career we should probably be grateful for witnessing first-hand. Read more -
Pearson vs. Winner: Ultimate Fighter 9 Finale
By: Jake Rossen

Up Next: Ross Pearson vs. Andre Winner
Whoever loses, Michael Bisping wins: both Pearson and Winner are Brits, which means UK team coach Bisping can get bragging rights regardless of the outcome. (Fortunately, he’s modest about these sorts of things.) Some unfortunate handicapping comes courtesy of Winner himself, who told the Sun in May that “I was confident of Ross beating all of the lightweights in the house.” So there you go.
Round 1
For the lightweight "TUF" title: taking that into consideration, shouldn't these final fights be five rounds? Maybe split the difference and call it four? Both guys look tightly wound. They're also wearing virtually identical fight shorts, which should infuriate In Touch Weekly. Winner seems content to push Pearson into the cage and hope he spontaneously combusts or something. Alternative strategy: knee Pearson in the groin. Stilted round: Winner finishes with a theatrical flurry.
Round 2
Bisping is spotted on camera, which prompts the crowd to boo. So Bisping applauds himself, which is very much in character. Pearson and Winner are content to fight as though they're in a phone booth, sticking to each other in the clinch and trading knee strikes.
Round 3
Twelve minutes in, both fighters realize it's incredibly difficult to end a fight from the clinch and decide to open the distance. For about 30 seconds. The crowd is on their best funeral behavior. Winner is likely to take this for being the more aggressive hugger. "How good is this?" Goldberg asks. Of course he did. Who was the idiot who suggested this should have gone four rounds?
Decision
29-28 for Ross Pearson. Turns out Winner was right. UFC President Dana White hands Pearson a gigantic piece of glass that threatens to topple over the ring girl. The "six-figure contract" gets a mention.
