Tara LaRosa Wants to See Ronda Rousey vs. Marloes Coenen, Sara McMann
By: Sherdog.com Staff
Tara LaRosa, on “Rewind,” discussing whom she’d like to see fight Ronda Rousey:
“I don’t know, but honestly I think that a grappling specialist is going to be the person that comes closest or eventually takes Ronda out. … I’d love to see how Marloes Coenen does against Ronda. Marloes has a terrific ground game. She has a very good ground game. Even though we saw her get submitted by Miesha [Tate], she’s been around for so long. Marloes has been training and fighting longer than I have and I started in 2001. … Sara McMann, the [silver] medalist in wrestling in the Olympics -- this would be a terrific matchup. Two Olympic medalists who have similar backgrounds. I think it would be awesome. I would love to see if Rousey can get Sara to the mat and what would happen if so. I’ve trained with Sara McMann before. She is freaky strong. She is so strong. I can’t get her down, but I’m not an Olympic-level athlete. I don’t know. That’s a very interesting matchup right there.”

Sara McMann Recounts Her Side of Ronda Rousey Bout That Fell Through
By: Sherdog.com Staff
Sara McMann, on “Cheap Seats,” giving her take on a proposed fight with Ronda Rousey that fell through:
“My manager called me and said, ‘Do you want to fight Ronda Rousey? Both your pro debuts at 140 [pounds].’ I was pretty adamant about being at 135 since that’s closer to the best weight for me, but at that point I was like, I can’t really even be picky at all because it seems like I’m never going to get someone to step up. I said if you think that’s the best career move for me, then yeah, I’ll fight her. It was for Shark Fights, and it was $5,000 to fight, $5,000 to win and that didn’t include any kind of sponsorship deal that they would have helped us with.
“So I was like, yeah, OK. And then I didn’t hear from [manager Monte Cox] for a week, which is not very usual. He usually contacts me back after a couple of days. He told me to give it a little bit more time. Somebody, I think the matchmakers -- he told me the matchmaker told him that they were trying to talk her into saying yes to the fight. I was like, OK, this is really good money. To come out of the gates making $5,000 to fight and $5,000 to win your first fight? We would be making way more money second, third and fourth fights.
“Then they came back and they were just like, they turned it down. I was like, great. If I can’t get an Olympic bronze medalist to fight me, I’m never going to fight. It actually made me even more depressed about fighting.”

Struggle to Find Fights Took Sara McMann to ‘Poopy’s Pub & Grub’
By: Sherdog.com Staff
Sara McMann, on “Cheap Seats,” discussing her struggle to get fights:
“My MMA career was on the rocks, actually, going from amateur to pro. I found three amateur fights. I was having a really difficult time. … I had probably over 12 promotions try to have me on their show and it fall through and the opponents drop out and people saying, ‘I’ve been matchmaking for 10 years and I’ve never had this kind of problem.’ I was thinking, ‘Man, I actually think that I’m not going to be able to fight.’ I wasn’t able to fight some of the higher-level girls that would accept the fight just because they had so many more fights than me. Commissions wouldn’t approve it, and nobody else who had less than five fights was going to say yes.
“I was like, ‘Oh my God, I think I’m not going to be able to do this.’ I was completely shocked. It was really stressful at first, and then luckily some of the girls stepped up to the plate and said, ‘I’ll take the challenge,’ and came through, and I fought with them. I give total respect to them. They helped my career, and I hope that I helped theirs. …
“One of my amateur shows, I fought at Poopy’s Pub & Grub, at a biker bar, in the Skid Mark Arena. And it was outdoors. And it was raining. … But I had to do it. She was the only girl that would fight me, so let’s do it. In the rain.”

Rick Hawn Doesn’t See Anyone Beating Fellow Olympian Ronda Rousey
By: Sherdog.com Staff
Rick Hawn, on “The Savage Dog Show,” discussing fellow judo Olympian Ronda Rousey and whether there’s a woman out there who can beat her in MMA:
“No. She’s too athletic. … Unless there’s another Olympic athlete. I know Sara McMann’s an Olympic wrestler, which I lived with her when I was out at Colorado Springs at the [Olympic] Training Center. She could probably be the only one that could give Ronda some trouble. But again, with wrestling, they don’t have submissions in it, so you never know.”

Weekend Rundown: Olympic Medalists Rousey, McMann Win Quick
By: Chris Nelson

Judoka Ronda Rousey and wrestler Sara McMann took a combined 81 seconds to roll through their opposition Friday night, as both Olympic medalists improved to 2-0 in their burgeoning professional MMA careers.
Rousey, 24, squared off against debuting kickboxer Charmaine Tweet in a 150-pound contest on Hard Knocks Fighting Championship’s “School of Hard Knocks 12” card at Century Casino in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Employing her skill of trade, the 2008 Beijing Games bronze medalist twice floored Tweet with judo-flavored takedowns, moving to full mount on the second try and securing a textbook armbar after only 49 seconds. Despite clocking in at less than one minute, the submission finish still took nearly twice as long as Rousey’s March pro debut, a 25-second armbarring of Ediane Gomes.
Meanwhile, at the Western North Carolina Agricultural Center in Fletcher, N.C., McMann met former Canadian Olympic weightlifter Julie Malenfant on the fourth offering from BlackEye Promotions. The 30-year-old McMann, who became the first American woman to medal in wrestling with her freestyle bronze at the 2004 Athens Games, needed just 32 seconds to plow down “Badchild” and secure a stoppage with punches from mount. The show’s undercard saw former Rousey adversary Gomes submit the Gilbert Melendez-trained Katrine Alendal with a 42-second ankle lock. Read more
