Junior dos Santos had some choice words about his rival’s punching power. | Photo: Dave Mandel/Sherdog.com

Junior dos Santos apparently enjoys stoking the flames of his rivalry with Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight titleholder Cain Velasquez, as the two men head towards their UFC 166 rubber match on Oct. 19 in Houston.

In a June 19 interview with MSN Esportes, dos Santos claimed the champion “hits like a girl,” this despite the fact that Velasquez floored him with one punch and nearly finished him in the first round of their UFC 155 rematch in December. The overhand right sent the Brazilian careening to the canvas and permanently altered the trajectory of the bout. Velasquez swarmed with his trademark ground-and-pound, and though dos Santos survived, he went on to lose a one-sided unanimous decision: 50-45, 50-43 and 50-44. Velasquez was successful on 11 of his 33 takedown attempts, all while out-landing dos Santos 210-66 in total strikes and 111-57 in significant strikes.

Velasquez successfully defended the heavyweight crown at UFC 160 in May, as he needed less than 90 seconds to dismiss Antonio Silva. Dos Santos was victorious at the same event, as he wiped out Mark Hunt with a spinning hook kick in the co-main event, setting up his third showdown with Velasquez.

Yves Edwards file photo: Peter Lockley | Sherdog.com

The preliminary portion of every UFC event usually comes and goes with little to no fanfare. As an avowed lover of all things undercard, let us put an end to that trend with a top-to-bottom breakdown of the UFC Fight Night 22 dark matches. Insert Al Pacino-style “Hoo-ah” here.

    Yves of Destruction

Talent has never been an issue for Yves Edwards. Ask most anyone who has trained with him and they will tell you that if talent were the end-all be-all of MMA, Edwards would be a perennial top five lightweight. Of course, talent accounts for only part of the equation, and Edwards’ mental hiccups are well-documented.

However, the fighter whose growth was stunted by losing winnable fights was nowhere to be found at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Texas. Time and time again, John Gunderson went for takedowns and tried to hold his own on the feet. He accomplished neither. It was the kind of complete, three-dimensional performance for which Edwards’ fans pray every time he enters the cage.

Six years ago, Edwards was the uncrowned champion of the UFC’s lightweight division. Winning the title he once held unofficially may be unlikely at best, but he still has the game to keep many of his contemporaries from doing the same.
