  • Podcast: Boetsch, Zahabi, Cruickshank, Vazquez By: Sherdog.com Staff

TJ De Santis and Jeff Sherwood returned to The Sherdog Radio Network on Wednesday for a packed edition of "Beatdown." Joining them were fighters Tim Boetsch, Daron Cruickshank, Javier Vazquez, and coach Firas Zahabi.

Boetsch is closing in on his final training sessions in preparation for his Dec. 29 showdown with Constantinos Philippou. "The Barbarian" chats about the upcoming middleweight title, his status as top contender for Anderson Silva's title and where the nickname "Barbarian" originated from. The Matt Hume-trained fighter also talks about a potential showdown with Chris Weidman, his original opponent for the UFC 155 card.

Zahabi was in the corner of Rory MacDonald on Saturday night in Seattle for the UFC on Fox 5 card. Zahabi joined "Beatdown" to talk about his charge's impressive decision win over B.J. Penn. Firas breaks down the strategy that was implemented in dismantling a legend of the sport, MacDonald's future and what's next for GSP. The coach considers what challenges Georges St. Pierre would have with guys like Johny Hendricks, Nick Diaz and UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva.

Cruickshank was another fighter who impressed viewers of the UFC on Fox 5 card. “The Detroit Superstar” stopped Henry Martinez with a highlight-reel head-kick knockout. Cruickshank joins the show to talk about his win, growing up in a fighting family and the pride he has fighting out of The Motor City.

Vazquez has always been one to speak his mind. The former King of the Cage and Gladiator Challenge champion joined De Santis and Sherwood looking for a fight. On Jan. 19 and 20 in Los Angeles, Vasquez’s wife Rose Gracie will be promoting her Gracie U.S. Nationals event as part of the L.A. Fitness Expo. Vazquez issued an invitation to world champion grapplers to join him in a four-man 155-pound tournament where you only advance if you can submit your opponent. "Showtime" breaks down what he feels is wrong with sport jiu-jitsu and why he would like to compete with some of the world's best under his set of rules.

TJ and Jeff also take a look at the sport's current events, including what fans think of Benson Henderson being considered as Fighter of the Year for 2012. Check out the show here

  • Tim Boetsch Refuses to Talk His Way into Title Shot By: Sherdog.com Staff

Tim Boetsch, on “Beatdown,” discussing whether he should be more vocal and try to generate more attention for himself:

“It’s crossed my mind before, but I don’t want to be that guy. I even said to one of my friends last night, they were like, ‘Oh, you need to get on Twitter. You need to start blowing up Dana [White] and saying how you deserve this and that.’ And I said, ‘That’s really not my style.’ I don’t want to be one of those guys who talks his way into a fight. I think it’s much better to fight your way in there. When you do that, you’re going to be more prepared for the fight versus talking your way in and then all of a sudden you find yourself in a fight you’re not ready for.”

  • Top 5 Forum Threads of the Week By: Jeff Sherwood

The masses may want a super fight between Ultimate Fighting Championship titleholders Jon Jones and Anderson Silva, but the fighters themselves do not. The thought that arguably the sport’s two most dominant champions might never meet in the cage will undoubtedly leave some fans saddened. For now, Jones will focus on his upcoming matchup with Dan Henderson at UFC 151, and Silva will wait for a new contender to emerge at 185 pounds.

Plenty of other subjects made the rounds on the Sherdog.net forums this week, including Michael Bisping’s decision to take aim at Tim Boetsch, the latest on Chael Sonnen, the continuation of the Ronda Rousey-Miesha Tate feud and testosterone replacement therapy.

  • Tim Boetsch: I Have to Finish Hector Lombard By: Sherdog.com Staff

Tim Boetsch, on “The Jordan Breen Show,” discussing what it will take to improve his chances of getting a middleweight title shot:

“I think the key is taking out Hector [Lombard] in impressive fashion. I don’t think anybody expected [Chris] Weidman to maul on [Mark] Munoz like he did, but he did himself a big favor by putting on an impressive performance. Absolutely that’s what I need to do. I need to take out Hector and really get people talking about how I do it. I’ve got to be exciting and I’ve got to finish him. That’s what I have in my mind.”

  • Cut to Middleweight Difficult for Boetsch By: Sherdog.com Staff

Tim Boetsch, on “The Savage Dog Show,” discussing his cut to middleweight:

“I don’t really feel like a middleweight, honestly, especially when I’m making that weight cut. It feels like a long ways away when I first start. It gets more miserable the closer I get. I still haven’t settled in. It’s been a hard cut for me every time I’ve done it and I expect it to be a hard cut again, but I believe middleweight is where I belong. I’ve had some success and I’m looking to keep that success going with a win over [Yushin] Okami and then certainly a shot at whoever’s next in line. I believe I’m a middleweight, but it doesn’t feel very good being there.”
