  • Woodley Enjoys Nullifying Opponents’ Games By: Sherdog.com Staff

Tyron Woodley, on “The Savage Dog Show,” discussing fans and his mindset in the cage:

“They want to see a knockout. They want to see kickboxing fights. They want to see just wars and people going back and forth and bloodied. Guess what? I would rather fight a guy and stop everything he’s doing and try to have some good moments in the fight, win, continue moving closer toward the belt [than] take a loss. You take half of your check home. Those are variables that people don’t realize. I love the fans and I want them to be happy, but at the end of the day, I’ve got a wife. I’ve got a kid. I’ve got a goal [to be] a Strikeforce titleholder that I’ve got to achieve. That’s what’s in the back of my mind.”

  • Woodley: Daley Won’t Look Me in the Eye By: Sherdog.com Staff

Tyron Woodley (Pictured), on “Beatdown,” discussing his bout Saturday against Paul Daley:

“He can talk whatever he wants to talk, but he doesn’t believe it. He won’t even look me in the eye when he shakes my hand. I judge a man by what he does, not by what he says because a mouth can say anything. It’s going to be an ugly fight. I’m going to try to wear his butt out as many ways as I can. If it ends in a TKO or knockout, whatever, so be it, but at the end of the day, I’m going to get the victory.”

  • Strikeforce Postmortem: Diaz’s Hit Sequel, Coenen By: Jake Rossen

Nick Diaz (red gloves) vs. K.J. Noons: Dave Mandel | Sherdog.com

Sometimes, ugly is enough to get the job done.

Saturday, Nick Diaz needed five rounds and another blood-crusted face to best K.J. Noons nearly three years after a doctor stoppage gave Noons a win over him. Neither man was particularly graceful: Diaz could never quite slide into his volume punching that feels worse than it looks, and Noons was sometimes channeling Leonard Garcia in KO blows that he threw his entire body into.

It’s not that it was bad striking: it’s that MMA presents too many variables for that striking to ever be as tightly constructed as we see in higher-level boxing matches. Some are going to confuse that for inability, but you do what you have to when takedowns and kicks are part of the equation.

What else did the fight prove? Noons is probably one of MMA’s most skilled boxers, but he’s also undersized for the welterweight division: there’s a world of difference between his frame hitting you and a 185-pound man cutting down. But what he lacks in size he makes up for in speed and technique; Diaz posted one of his better career wins Saturday. The bad news? It might be one of the few remaining significant victories available to him currently in Strikeforce.
