Carwin: Lesnar Bout ‘Not Happening’ at UFC 108
Thursday, November 05, 2009
by Brian Knapp (bknapp@sherdog.com)

Shane Carwin’s wait just got longer.

His scheduled Nov. 21 title fight against Brock Lesnar already postponed, the unbeaten heavyweight contender on Wednesday announced that the UFC champion will not be prepared to defend his crown at UFC 108 on Jan. 2 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

According to Carwin, Lesnar has been diagnosed with mononucleosis, a viral infection that results in extreme fatigue that can linger for two to three months.

“Guys my manager Jason Genet just told me that UFC 108 is not happening,” Carwin wrote at shane-carwin.com. “Brock has Mono and what the UFC has told me is that I have earned a title shoot [sic] but I have to wait for the title holder. I hope Brock gets well soon.”

Carwin, undefeated through 11 professional fights, last competed in March, when he stopped one-time UFC title contender Gabriel Gonzaga on first-round strikes at UFC 96. A training partner of top middleweight Nate Marquardt, none of his 11 career bouts have reached the second round. He owns 22-, 29-, 31-, 44-, and 49-second victories, and, at 6-foot-4, 265 pounds, remains one of the few men who compares favorably to Lesnar in terms of size and strength.

Lesnar, who has become the UFC’s most dependable pay-per-view draw, has not fought since July, when he wrecked Frank Mir in the UFC 100 main event and avenged the only defeat of his career. The former World Wrestling Entertainment superstar has become a lightning rod in the heavyweight division, having announced his arrival as an elite fighter with a technical knockout victory over UFC hall of famer Randy Couture one year ago.
