Thompson Defends Bodog Title

LAS VEGAS, Feb. 1 -- Chalk it up as 10 in a row for Nick Thompson (Pictures).

In fact, make that 18 wins in his last 19 fights, as "The Goat" endured an early assault to submit John Troyer and cap off a stellar night of mixed martial arts action that was Bodog Fight's first card in Las Vegas.

All seven of the scheduled contests were entertaining, but the featured bout was clearly the highlight of the men's battles. Thompson was a bit skeptical entering the bout because he knew virtually nothing of Troyer. He said that sometimes young, untested fighters like to storm out of the gates and attack their opponents, which is precisely what Troyer did.

Thompson delivered a few hard left hands to the face of the hard-charging Troyer, but the reigning HOOKnSHOOT middleweight champion quickly scooped up Thompson and slammed him down hard to the canvas.

Thompson's nose was immediately broken, and blood poured from his nostrils. Troyer followed that up with a series of anxious punches, but he couldn't capitalize on the slightly woozy Thompson.

"He hit me in the face, can you believe that?" Thompson joked after the fight. "I'm not sure what busted up my nose, but it sure hurt. He's a strong guy and he came to fight."

However, Thompson cleared his head and fended off an armbar attempt from Troyer. Soon Thompson was teeing off on his foe after a sweep.

A thudding right hand from Thompson bloodied Troyer's nose, and when Troyer became almost entangled in his own corner, Thompson stood up and dragged him by his right foot a few feet toward the center of the ring. From there, "The Goat" continued to rain punches down from half-guard.

Troyer gave up his back to avoid more punishment, and he was stopped by a rear-naked choke at 3:46 of the first, allowing Thompson to retain his welterweight belt.

If Kaitlin Young and Sara Schneider never fight again, it would be a travesty.

The lankier Young routinely served Schneider heaping helpings of punches, but the shorter Schneider just kept coming forward. Whenever Schneider was deposited onto her back, which was often, she always found a way to snake on an armbar. Young wriggled free every time in the first round, and toward the end of the opening stanza, she sprung back to her feet and administered a stunning left head kick.

A short right hand followed, and it seemed as though it was curtains for Schneider, who latched onto another armbar attempt right at the bell.

The torrid pace continued into the second, when Young dropped her opponent with a massive straight left hand. However, as usual, the spunky Schneider's octopus-like maneuvers sucked the overzealous Young into yet another armbar attempt. This time Young wouldn't escape, and she tapped out at the 35-second mark of the second round.

Seth Baczynski (Pictures) quickly set the pace against Chris Kennedy (Pictures) with a sizzling right hand seconds into their welterweight contest. Kennedy stumbled into a standing guillotine attempt, but Baczynski couldn't find the leverage to force the submission.

Kennedy then brought his adversary to the ground, but after a stalemate, referee Herb Dean (Pictures) stood up the fighters. From that point forward it was all Baczynski, as he unfurled a vicious right cross that dropped Kennedy. He then pounced on his wounded opponent and rained down punches until Dean halted the fight at 2:50.

Featherweight Chad George (Pictures) made quick work of Rick Screeton. George was caught early in the guard, where Screeton tried a gogoplata. Having none of it, George slammed Screeton, whose body went limp when his head hit the canvas.

George landed a few punches for good measure, but referee Steve Mazzagatti was already waiving it off. The official time of the TKO came just 39 seconds into the fight.

In the other women's bout, Angela Magana (Pictures) scored an impressive second-round win via armbar. The fight was a classic back-and-forth battle in which Lyn Alvarez was landing many punches while Magana continuously pressed for chokes and armbars. However, it was Magana's submission prowess that shined, as she got the sub at 1:25 of the second.

Light heavyweight Aaron Simpson made it look a little too easy against Scott Dingman, who was making his pro debut.

The two clinched right off the bat, and that led to a trip takedown for Simpson. When the fighters hit the canvas, Simpson was already in full mount. From there he bombarded his opponent with punches.

Dingman couldn't sweep or buck Simpson off, and eventually he had to be rescued by Mazzagatti. The official time of the TKO came at 2:40 of the very first round.

After an eventful two rounds with Bryan Humes and Ryan Murray taking turns walloping each other with punches and kicks to every inch of their respective bodies, the larger Humes dropped Murray with a perfect left uppercut, right cross combo. Murray went down Queer Street, and just as Humes was trying to land more punches, referee Yves Lavigne stopped the heavyweight bout 1:30 into the third round.
