Mac Bombs Barrett on the Mat

LONDON, April 12 -- In the Main event of Cage Rage Contenders 9,
the monstrous Joe Mac
(Pictures) took down Jason Barrett (Pictures) and battered him continuously for
three minutes until referee Grant Waterman stepped in to stop the
contest.
Although Mac retained control for the entire fight, he had some noticeable damage forming around his eyes afterwards.
"He caught me with a few, punching up and stuff like that," Mac
said. "Jay comes to fight. But I started posturing up and I felt a
few more punches were going to break him, so I put more power into
it."
Relaxing in the dressing room after the brutal performance, Mac gave his thoughts on his night's work, which took place in front of a sell-out crowd of a couple thousand fans inside the Troxy nightclub: "Good, nice and easy, easier than what I thought."
In the chief supporting bout, Suley Mahmoud (Pictures) controlled the majority of his fight with Welshman Jordan James (Pictures) to seal a unanimous points win.
Mahmoud's damaging low kicks made the difference in the stand up, but by the end of the fight, most of the Swansea fighter's body had been reddened by the Londoner's determined ground attack.
Jack Mason (Pictures) exposed a class gulf on the ground between him and Jake Bostwick (Pictures). After promising to showcase his standup skills, Mason wisely shot in for a takedown and set about beating on his opponent.
Bostwick, however, soon escaped from a guillotine and seized top position. Mason was quick to react and ensnared the Kidbrooke fighter in a tight heelhook for a nasty submission victory.
Featherweight Ashleigh Grimshaw (Pictures) put on an impressive display as he took down and hammered out Italian fighter Christian Binda.
Grimshaw was forced to pull guard a minute into the fight, but quickly worked his way back into mount and bashed his foe into submission after four minutes.
Marvin Arnold fought bravely in his wild bout with karate practitioner, Kes Kpokpodgri; however, he may well be slightly disappointed by his less than stellar performance.
Kpokpodgri was game and physically able, but making his debut in MMA his skills were not quite up the task. After a series of scrappy exchanges, Arnold, fighting with what appeared to be quite a nasty shin injury, managed to avoid disqualification for a brutal downward elbow and land enough punches to finish the job early in the final round.
Kym Farid (Pictures) was on the end of some brutal kicks in his fight with Mamarizaev Jahongir (Pictures). The Lithuanian smashed through Farid's guard with a series of punches and high kicks -- the last of which appeared to be illegal as the blow was delivered as Farid slumped to the floor, causing the fight to be declared a no-contest.
A replay failed to provide a clear answer as to whether Farid was grounded at the time the kick landed, leaving fighters screaming for a rematch as the verdict was announced.
Ryan White was forced to work very hard for the takedown in his heavyweight fight with Denniston Sutherland (Pictures). The Brighton fighter persisted with his takedown attempts, but Sutherland proved to be a tricky character. Seizing control of White's back as he surged forward, Sutherland choked his way to a well-deserved victory.
Jody Cottham (Pictures) looked a man possessed before his Lightweight contest with Jason Young (Pictures). To his credit, Cottham fought valiantly, but had no answers for the Team Titan fighter's explosive takedown or ground assault. Young quickly took mount position and hammered out an impressive three-minute stoppage win.
Lithuanian fighter Marius Sukys (Pictures) scored another win on the Contenders show as he stunned the crowd with an incredible spinning hook kick that caught opponent, Richard Griffin (Pictures), on the temple. The blow knocked Griffin cold less than two minutes into the contest.
Danny Cubitt started well against James Elson (Pictures). He took the London fighter down and began a machine-gunning ground assault of short punches. Unfortunately for Cubitt, the blows did not have the desired effect. Elson rode out the storm before reversing the situation and finishing with a rear-naked choke.
Lee Wieczorek (Pictures)worked hard in his bout with Steven Elliott (Pictures), repeatedly taking down the Extreme Tae Kwon Do fighter and controlling on the floor to earn a unanimous points win.
Newcomer Umidjon Mavlyanov showed some vicious ground-and-pound in his 47-second victory over Azran Quasid (Pictures). After bundling Quasid to the mat, a steam of punches from the judo black belt gave him his first Cage Rage win.
Edgelson Lua knocked out Dan Mohavedi after only 30 seconds of action. A high kick from Lua only spurred Mohavedi on, leading him straight onto a perfect right that sent him crashing to the floor.
In the opening contest of the night, Chris Greg defeated Kieran Hanbly with a guillotine choke after rocking him on the floor in the second round.
Tom Watson (Pictures) also dismantled Steven Dossett with a variety of hard kicks and knees, knocking him down with a hard knee and eventually finishing his opponent in late the second round.
