Hughes and Penn Battle for UFC Welterweight Belt
Introduction
Sep 22, 2006
The UFC 63 main card features a reworked main event that may appeal
to more fans than the original match-up. With an injury to Georges St. Pierre
(Pictures), few thought the headliner would
survive such a direct hit. But one of the men capable of making
sure this card wouldn’t skip a beat just happened to be
available.
B.J. Penn (Pictures), the only man to defeat Matt Hughes (Pictures) in the UFC in over five years, was ready to step up, and as many of you may know, ironically it was St. Pierre who defeated Penn in his last UFC appearance.
On the televised under card, rising star Mike Swick (Pictures) puts his unbeaten UFC record and penchant for lightning fast finishes on the line against Canada’s elbow slicing title contender David Loiseau (Pictures). “The Crow” is out to redeem himself from a poor performance in his middleweight title shot, while “Quick” Swick hopes to earn his first crack at the gold.
The card also features the return of Jens Pulver (Pictures). “Little Evil” departed the UFC undefeated with title in hand. He comes back to the Octagon against UFC rookie Joe Lauzon (Pictures) and finds a lightweight division that was just recently deemed worthy of new life.
Also on the main draw, wrestlers Jason Lambert (Pictures) and Rashad Evans (Pictures) battle in the cage; and TUF 2’s Melvin Guillard (Pictures) returns against newcomer Gabe Ruediger (Pictures).
