Doggy Bag: The Sweetest Science
Monday, September 28, 2009
Everyone answers to somebody, so we, the staff at Sherdog.com, have decided to defer to our readers.

“The Doggy Bag” gives you the opportunity to speak about what’s on your mind from time to time.

Our reporters, columnists, radio hosts, and editors will chime in with our answers and thoughts, so keep the emails coming.

This week, readers weigh-in on Quinton Jackson's decision to delay his bout with Rashad Evans to film a movie and boxing's war with MMA.

As a former boxer and big boxing fan, I am now totally addicted to MMA. I can’t even watch boxing any more, even the big fights with guys like Floyd Mayweather. I still love the “sweet science,” but mainly as part of the MMA skill set. It’s so good to see so many MMA guys getting good at boxing now.

I watched boxing for years and loved it, but it just died so bad. The other thing is I have been able to convert most of my friends to MMA. I had no luck ever getting them to watch Boxing, but they just love MMA! Even my kids love it!
-- Marty from Brisbane, Australia

Jason Probst, contributor: I understand completely. I think I might have said it somewhere or written it, but boxing for me was a 30-year marriage that went downhill, and I met someone new (MMA) that did all the great things my wife used to do, but got lazy and stopped doing. I'm perfect and unassailable in this equation, naturally.

It’s basic product offerings, volume, quality control and branding. MMA -- and UFC as its flagship promotion -- basically have that to the hilt. And look at up-and-coming promotions like Strikeforce, which consistently make solid matchups. There are few if any sub par contenders getting title shots, because the fans wouldn’t stand for it. MMA at this point has to be on its game with virtually every card, or you lose your shirt. Boxing is a different business model with too many conflicting constituencies.

Thanks for writing in and please keep in touch. I concur with the friends thing...lots of my buddies are into MMA and barely follow boxing, if at all.
