Freestyle Fighting Championships 11 Review

[Biloxi, Mississippi, September 10, 2004] The Freestyle Fighting Championship returned to the Beau Rivage Resort and Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi for their eleventh installment. The card looked promising but was decimated by injuries in the last weeks leading up to the event. Both headliners, Jorge Gurgel and Dave Gardner, succumbed to injuries and had to be replaced on short notice. Jake Short and Dennis Davis stepped up to the plate and laid it on the line for the Gulf Coast fans.

In the Main Event, Jake Short manhandled Team Quest’s Dennis Davis but the fight was not without a bit of controversy as the best argument for an enclosed fight environment was on display as the fighters just could not seem to keep the match in the ring.

On three different occasions Short used questionable, if not illegal, tactics to escape potential fight ending submission attempts by Davis. In the first round Davis secured a pair of guillotine chokes that looked to have Short in trouble. On the first attempt Short simply backed through the loose ropes of the ring and ended up on a ringside table. After the fight was restarted in the standing position, Davis latched on with another guillotine attempt only to be driven right through the ropes by the desperate Short. Referee Mike Gallo warned Short after the second infraction but did not deduct a point.

Short yet again found his way into the crowd in the second round as he attempted to stuff a Davis shot and subsequently had his feet slip out from under him as he was deposited into the first row of paying customers. No worse for the ware, Short continued to throw Davis around like it was nothing, scoring takedowns at will.

Near the beginning of the third round Davis again ratcheted yet another guillotine choke right against the ropes. Seemingly in an attempt to free himself, Short grasped the ropes as he tried to separate from a potentially perilous position. Referee Gallo attempted to pry his hand from the ropes but could not before Short had pulled his head out of danger. Amazingly, the fight was allowed to continue without a warning. Only minutes later it was Short’s hand being raised in victory as he gained the rear mount, flattened out Davis and pounded away for the referee stoppage at 3:03 of the third round.

The event promoter, Rob Braniff informed Sherdog.com that Team Quest trainer and Davis’ cornerman Robert Follis had lodged an official appeal regarding the incidents that transpired during the bout. No official ruling had been made at the time of publication but check back with Sherdog.com in the coming days for the results of the appeal.
