“Ice Cold” Vovchanchyn was one of the original sprawl-and-brawlers, a talented kickboxer with ridiculous power, outstanding killer instinct and surprisingly slick technique packed into his squat frame. Inoue had dropped a decision to Mark Kerr under the Pride Fighting Championships banner in January 2000, but prior to that had beaten Randy Couture during “The Natural’s” brief time outside the UFC.

The two fighters came out looking to throw bombs at Pride 10 on Aug. 27, 2000, and Vovchanchyn’s connected more often. In the ensuing madness, the Ukrainian ended up on top, and the beating began. “Ice Cold” landed nearly 150 total strikes in 10 minutes, mostly from inside the Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt’s guard. It was a relentless stream of vicious, powerful shots, and Inoue’s repeated attempts at a submission from his back went absolutely nowhere.

When the first round ended after 10 minutes, Inoue was unable to stand under his own power or even make it onto his stool in the corner. Against Inoue’s protests, the doctors, referee and his corner decided to call it off, thus ending one of the most one-sided beatings in the history of the sport.
