Monday Morning Reverie: No Longer the Bridesmaid

Random Thoughts

The IFL and Lindland’s Tyson-esque Power

To be fair, I haven’t seen the fight on tape just yet and I, like the rest of us, won’t be able to see Matt Lindland (Pictures)-Jeremy Horn (Pictures) until September 24 (unless the fight organization sends me a copy of the event via FedEx rush delivery … hint, hint). But after reading Greg Savage’s ringside report, I was amazed at how Lindland stopped Horn. Since when does “The Law” have dynamite attached to his glove? You mean to tell me that Lindland stopped Horn quicker than Chuck Liddell (Pictures)? It looks like being the legitimate No. 1 contender to the UFC middleweight championship means both everything and nothing.

TUF Season 4

Sherdog’s Scott Holmes does a remarkable job every week with his “Guide to The Ultimate Fighter” and he does it so well I stay away from writing about the show in my columns. But after watching the latest episode this past Thursday I absolutely have to scribe something about Jeremy Jackson (Pictures) and his complete lack of rational decision making. I have run across plenty of people who have made horrible decisions in life but this cat takes the cake.

Let me get this straight: he’s been living out of his car, has been down in the dumps, dead broke and absolutely needs this show to catapult him back on track in his personal life. Win or lose, regardless of how far he goes, the show will bring him much more fame than he’d ever dreamed of as well as the biggest purses of his career.

Jackson knows the rules of living in the house for a whopping six weeks so … he … leaps over the wall in the backyard to get some play from some chick from the Y. Of course everybody finds out, in particular Dana White (you know, the guy who controls his UFC fate), and he gets booted from the show. After he is evicted from the house Chill Town style, he bellyaches about how he blew probably the last chance he’ll get at making some serious money.

Wow, what a fool. Actually, his thought process gives a bad name to fools the world over. What was this guy thinking? That decision to score was even more moronic than Noah Inhofer’s choice to voluntarily leave TUF 3 to set the record straight with his girlfriend of a few months. Inhofer hasn’t fought since the exhibition match he won on the show. Where do you think Jackson will go from here?

Flabbergasted is Mike Sloan at both Jackson’s idiocy and of Dana White’s t-Shirt. Where does this guy buy some of his outfits?

Another Steroid Blunder

Wow, Stephan Bonnar (Pictures) tested positive for an illegal steroid called Boldenone, a drug used by veterinarians to treat animals. When are fighters going to learn that the Nevada State Athletic Commission ACTUALLY TESTS FIGHTERS and that their testing procedures are arguably the strongest in sports this side of the Olympics?

The answer is never.

Most fighters who have been caught using illegal steroids have actually lost their fights. It seems to me that steroids actually make a worse fighter. If Bonnar thought his UFC career was in great peril after dropping two fights in a row (three if you include the gift over Keith Jardine (Pictures)), where does he stand now?

It has been proven that in some cases athletes can give a false positive reading for steroids (more on that in a future column) — but not Boldenone.

Unless Bonnar was drugged or given these steroids by mistake, there is no reason other than competing in the Kentucky Derby for having Boldenone in your system. Hopefully Bonnar will be able to recover from this blunder and either stay in the UFC or make it back. We’ll see what happens

One More Thing

Today is the fifth anniversary of the terrible attacks on America. Please take some time out of your day to remember our fallen heroes and all of the innocent lives that were lost because of some psychotic terrorists. Please tribute the thousands we lost in some way and love those around you.
