Sherdog’s Top 10: Coolest Moves

10. Jung’s Twister
UFC Fight Night “Nogueira vs. Davis”
March 26, 2011 | Seattle

Chan Sung Jung first met Leonard Garcia at WEC 48, the promotion’s first and only attempt at a pay-per-view show, and the result was an epic, all-out war. “The Korean Zombie” lived up to his nickname, eating shot after shot and giving much better back to Garcia in return. The American took a split decision victory -- an absurd robbery of which Lee Murray would be proud.

When the Ultimate Fighting Championship announced the rematch between Jung and Garcia following its merger with the smaller World Extreme Cagefighting, anticipation ran high, and fans expected the same kind of knock-down, drag-out brawling that characterized their first encounter. That is not what happened, as the first round featured a more technical and measured -- though it was still entertaining -- approach to the striking exchanges than their WEC 48 meeting.

Garcia shot for a takedown at the end of the first round, and Jung easily reversed, passed and worked to his back. That should have been a teaser for what came next, as the second round passed with Jung soundly outstriking Garcia through most of the frame. With a little more than a minute left, Jung dropped Garcia to the ground after a kick, passed his guard, took his back and moved to a strange position as Garcia attempted to escape. Jung then grabbed Garcia’s neck and pulled, and shockingly, the “Bad Boy” tapped.

The submission in question was a twister, a staple of Eddie Bravo’s unorthodox 10th Planet no-gi grappling system. With slight variations, it is also found in catch wrestling and American folkstyle, where it is known as the “wrestler’s guillotine.” In this case, however, Jung was clear: He had picked up the submission and the setup from watching Bravo’s videos on YouTube and messing around with it in training.

Jung’s successful demonstration of the twister was its first, and to date only, use in the UFC.
