After dropping to 185 and taking the crown against the uber-tough Evan Tanner, Franklin was an impressive combination of strength and technique at the weight. Silva, meanwhile, was little-known outside of the hardcore fan base, with a spate of fights in Pride. The Brazilian was awarded a title shot after one UFC bout -- his 49-second destruction of Chris Leben. Some wondered if Silva had warranted a shot at the crown.
The Swing Moment: Two words -- the clinch. While Franklin remarked afterward that he had hoped to work from the position on Silva, it became brutally apparent that Silva was the master there, and his work in the clinch broke down Franklin from the jump. After a series of knees to the body and head, the game champion was still standing, despite being taken apart piece-by-piece from a series of laser-like strikes. Finally, he was finished with a knee to the head, as Silva took the belt. Rarely had a champion been so completely and thoroughly removed from the throne.
The Aftermath: After five defenses, an equally impressive rematch win over Franklin included, and two devastating forays into the 205-pound division, Silva retains the same air of invincibility he displayed three years ago. Whoever beats him will have to do something similar.
