The Weekly Wrap: March 28 - April 3
Sylvia to Alabama
Sylvia vs. Mercer to Alabama
After the state athletic control board in New Jersey opted not to approve the fight, it was reported this week that a boxing match between former heavyweight boxing champion Ray Mercer and former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia will be moved to Birmingham, Alabama. The fight will be Mercer's 45th pro boxing match and Sylvia's first. The fight is set for June 13 and will take place on a show titled "Adrenaline III." Unlike Cox's first two Adrenaline cards, this event is not expected to air on HDNet.
Promoter Monte Cox told Sherdog.com that the fight will not have to be sanctioned in Alabama because the state does not have a regulatory body that oversees mixed martial arts. Cox was originally going to stage the fight in Atlantic City. Sylvia told MMAWeekly.com that his next MMA fight will be in July for Affliction.
There is another fight coming to Alabama that a separate state refused to approve. Kyle Maynard, who was born with no elbows and knees yet became a media darling through his ability on high school and collegiate wrestling mats, will make his MMA debut in an amateur fight on April 25 in Auburn, Alabama. In 2007, Maynard was denied a license by Georgia’s athletic commission to fight in his hometown of Duluth.
