Neither woman was especially impressive, but 2007 ADCC champions will square off in the women's over-60-kilogram final when Penny Thomas meets Hannette Staack Quadros.
Thomas, 2007's over-67-kilo champ, went for a leglock early in her semi-final bout with Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos, but wound up giving top position to the Strikeforce 145-pound champion. Cyborg's top game was markedly better than she showed Saturday, and she nearly won the bout with a smooth pass to side control late in the points period, but was unable to hold position for the three seconds necessary to score points. In the first overtime period, Santos was penalized for accidentally kneeing Thomas in the head during a scramble. That penalty point wound up being the difference, as Thomas advanced to the final, (-1)-(-2) on points.
2007 60-kilo and absolute champ Hannette Staack Quadros was physically controlled by Rosangela Conceicao. The former Olympic judoka and Greco-Roman wrestler dominated top position over Staack, but was unable to escape her half guard. In the first overtime period, Staack would get the necessary points to advance to the final, but it was a far cry from the flying armbar win that allowed her to take the 2007 absolute division over Conceicao.
The 2007 champion of the now-defunct 55-kilogram category, Japan's
Sayaka Shioda will have a chance to add a 60-kilo title to her resume against BJJ world champion Luanna Alzuguir.
Shioda avenged her senior and trainer
Megumi Fujii's Saturday loss to Hillary Williams with armbar submission victory. Shioda locked up a kimura from the guard, which she turned into an inverted armbar before swinging her hips and rolling Williams over to coax the tap with a textbook jujigatame.
Alzuguir, however, engaged in a marathon with Laurence Cousin. Though she controlled top position throughout the opening 10 minutes, Alzuguir could not cleanly pass Cousin's guard. In overtime, Alzuguir sunk a deep rear-naked choke without hooks, which Cousin escaped, and responded to minutes later with a deep full-guard guillotine of her own. After a tactically brilliant escape, Alzuguir again got the back, sinking another rear-naked choke in the second overtime to earn a berth in the finals.
