By The Numbers: Cub Swanson vs. Darren Elkins

As two longstanding members of the Ultimate Fighting Championship featherweight division, it seems almost unthinkable that they have not yet faced one another inside the Octagon.

Cub Swanson will take on Darren Elkins in a three-round UFC Fight Night 199 showcase on Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. Though little more than bragging rights are at stake, it remains an intriguing on-paper affair. Swanson has won two of his past three bouts. He last appeared at UFC on ESPN 23, where he was victimized by a body kick and follow-up punches from Giga Chikadze just 63 seconds into their May 1 pairing. Elkins, meanwhile, enters the cage on the heels of back-to-back victories. He last competed on July 24, when he put away Darrick Minner with punches in the second round of their UFC on ESPN 27 encounter.

As Swanson and Elkins make last-minute adjustments ahead of their forthcoming clash, a look at some of the numbers that have accompanied them to this point:

38: Years of age for Swanson, who was born in Palm Springs, California, on Nov. 2, 1983.

12: Swanson wins by knockout or technical knockout, accounting for 44% of his career total (27). His list of UFC victims: Daniel Pineda, Dennis Siver, Charles Oliveira, Ross Pearson and George Roop. Swanson owns four other wins by submission and 11 more by decision.

8: Knockdowns landed by Swanson as a UFC featherweight, tying him with Chad Mendes and Max Holloway for third on the promotion’s all-time list at 145 pounds. Only Jeremy Stephens (11) and Josh Emmett (11) have been credited with more.

6: Organizations in which Swanson has competed as a mixed martial artist. He has gone 12-8 in the UFC, 5-3 in World Extreme Cagefighting, 5-0 in King of the Cage, 3-1 in Total Combat, 1-1 in the International Fighting and Boxing League and 1-0 in Beatdown in Bakersfield.

.740: Cumulative winning percentage between the 11 men—Chikadze, Holloway, Mendes, Shane Burgos, Renato Carneiro, Frankie Edgar (twice), Brian Ortega, Ricardo Lamas, Jose Aldo, Jens Pulver and Shannon Gugerty—who have defeated Swanson. They boast a combined record of 216-73-3.

37: Years of age for Elkins, who was born on May 16, 1984 in Portage, Indiana.

5: Elkins victories by submission, accounting for 19% of his career total (26). His methods of choice: three rear-naked chokes, one guillotine choke and one bulldog choke. Elkins holds nine other victories by knockout or technical knockout and 12 more by decision.

2,169: Total strikes landed by Elkins as a UFC featherweight, putting him second on the organization’s all-time list at 145 pounds. Only Holloway (2,711) has connected with more.

15: Consecutive calendar years in which Elkins has fought at least once. In addition to his 1-0 mark in 2021, he went 1-1 in 2020, 0-1 in 2019, 1-2 in 2018, 2-0 in 2017, 2-0 in 2016, 1-0 in 2015, 1-2 in 2014, 2-1 in 2013, 2-0 in 2012, 2-0 in 2011, 1-1 in 2010, 3-1 in 2009, 3-0 in 2008 and 4-0 in 2007.
